The Primary Care and Community Health Unit consists of 9 centres that provide a range of services for children, young people and their families, adults, older people and their carers. Our services range from health promotion, prevention and early detection through to assessment, treatment and continuing care. Our staff work in partnership with schools, GPs, hospitals, non-government agencies and other organisations to provide care across our centres, in people’s homes, other community venues as well as virtual care (telehealth).
Integrated Violence Prevention & Response Services (IVPRS) are responsible for strategic leadership, clinical service provision and capacity building for the portfolio areas of sexual assault, domestic violence, child protection and victims of crime.
On offer is a Permanent Full time opportunity for a Child Protection Counsellor, located at our Lemongrove Campus Penrith.
The Child Protection Counsellor is responsible for the provision of specialist tertiary level therapeutic and case management services to children, young people and their parent's/caregivers who have been in contact with the statutory child protection system or who are under the age of 10 years and are referred with problematic and sexually harmful sexual behaviours.
This role will see you provide comprehensive assessment, crisis support, counselling, case work, group work and advocacy for children, young people and adults accessing the service. You will work with often complex in nature individuals and families in a systemic, trauma informed framework, applying high level child protection knowledge, specialist clinical skills and independent professional judgement to provide sensitive clinically therapeutic interventions (counselling) to children and young people, who have experienced physical, emotional and psychological abuse and/or neglect including domestic and family violence and/or who are exhibiting problematic sexualised behaviours under 10 years of age.

What you will bring to the role
- Degree in Social Worker from an accredited course providing eligibility for membership of the Australia Association of Social Workers, or Degree in Psychology with full registration as a Psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia, or Bachelor's Degree in Counselling or a related field from a recognised and accepted education provider or such other qualification deemed equivalent by the employer.
- Demonstrated high level understanding of the dynamics, intersection and effects of child abuse, neglect, sexual abuse and domestic and family violence.
- Demonstrated and extensive experience in carrying out assessment and case management activities and in providing specialist counselling to children and families with proven ability to make independent professional judgements about case planning and clinical management of a complex client group.
- Demonstrated extensive experience in delivering best practice models for working individually and systemically with children, young people and adults who have experienced trauma and abuse including experience in holding an overarching trauma informed framework.
- Demonstrated experience working with people who have experienced interpersonal and intergenerational trauma.
- Demonstrated high level experience/knowledge of Child Protection statutory systems, reporting responsibilities and health role in recognising and responding to child abuse and neglect.
- Experience in and commitment to, working with individuals and families from indigenous backgrounds and/or diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Current driver's licence and willingness to use for work purposes. This may include driving long distances across the LHD.
