Apply now for a Career Medical Officer position in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, commencing in the 2026 clinical year within the Northern Rivers - Richmond Network (Lismore Base Hospital, Ballina District Hospital, Casino Memorial Hospital).

Our ideal candidate will meet the requirements as set in the Essential Criteria of the position description and have a commitment to working in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The CMO will work in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings including inpatient ward care, birthing unit, theatres and outpatients (antenatal, postnatal and gynaecology) clinics. They will also gain valuable experience to provide quality obstetric and gynaecological care to patients in a complex clinical environment.



Where you'll be working
Lismore Base Hospital (LBH) is the recognised Trauma Centre for the North Coast Region and is linked with the local helicopter retrieval service.
The hospital is an acute regional referral hospital of 280 beds on the Far North Coast of NSW, serving a population of approximately 170,000 people on the Far North Coast of NSW and has a busy Emergency Department (40,000 presentations annually), ICU and Coronary Care Unit, as well as Surgery (general, orthopaedic and speciality surgery), Paediatrics, Mental Health, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

LBH is an affiliated teaching hospital for medical students from the University of Sydney, University of Wollongong, University of Western Sydney and Bond University. The hospital has a strong commitment to teaching and support for its Junior Medical Officers.

Our region encompasses World Heritage listed rainforests and the pristine beaches of Evans Head, Ballina, Lennox Head and Byron Bay. What you'll be doing
The primary purpose of a Career Medical Officer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology is to provide is to provide safe and high quality care, assess and manage, under supervision, patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) and admitted to Women's Care.  The Career Medical Officer is responsible for the provision of effective clinical management of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Patients, under supervision, whilst developing expertise in Obstetrics and Gynaecology practice in a complex environment. The Career Medical Officer needs to be aware of their limitations and work in a collegiate and collaborate manner.

Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the trainee’s skills, knowledge and experience. The Medical Officer will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO). All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.

  2. Demonstrated ability to work independently in a supervised environment
  3. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team with an understanding of the roles of the doctor and other members of the healthcare team
  4. Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, family members and other members of the health care team
  5. Demonstrated good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment
  6. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management
  7. Evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to self-education
  8. Valid unrestricted drivers' licence for use in NSW/Australia and willingness to travel in the course of employment
