Suitable for CICM Trainees seeking to gain further experience and training in Intensive Care including subspecialties of Trauma, Cardiothoracics, NeuroICU, ECMO and Paediatric ICU. Demonstrated commitment to CICM training is an essential requirement.
Where you'll be working
The John Hunter Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a Level 6 referral centre for critically ill patients in the Hunter New England, Mid North Coast and Northern NSW Local Health Districts. It is the default centre for Trauma, Neurosurgery, Stroke, Vascular, Cardiothoracic and major General Surgery, as well as Interventional Radiology and Neuroradiology. The ICU is accredited for all aspects of CICM training, including the paediatric requirement through a 6 month rotation to the John Hunter Hospital Paediatric ICU, one of only three tertiary PICUs in NSW. Rotations for trainees may also include rotations to ICU, medicine and anaesthesia terms across JHH, Calvary Mater, Maitland, Tamworth and Gosford hospitals. The 796-bed hospital is the main teaching hospital of the University of Newcastle. The hospital contains the only trauma centre in New South Wales outside the Sydney Metropolitan Area and has the busiest Emergency Department in the state. John Hunter is the busiest trauma hospital in the state, and the second busiest in the country.

What you'll be doing
- To become a member of the Intensive Care trainee pool providing Intensive Care services. The position would be suitable for experienced medical officers seeking to gain further experience and training in Intensive Care Medicine whilst undertaking learning and professional development activities with the aim of progressing to a Fellow of the College of Intensive Care Medicine.
- Taking a leadership role in coordinating the admission, management and discharge planning of patients seen in or admitted to the unit within the public health organisation and ensuring that the admission and plans are documented in the medical record.
- The day-to-day assessment and management of the patients in the unit, communicating with them and their family the nature of their condition and its treatment.
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Completed at least three years residency since graduation with recent experience in Anaesthesia/Intensive Care and or Emergency Medicine at least at a senior resident level.
- Demonstrated commitment to CICM Training program and related medical experience in relevant specialties. Demonstrated work towards completion of CICM Primary Exam.
- Demonstrates ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
- Ability to demonstrate sound decision making and awareness of when and who to seek further advice.
- Demonstrated experience using excellent communication skills (verbal and written) with patients, relatives, medical and nursing colleagues, Allied health, ward staff and administration staff to ensure the appropriate management of the patient and build a positive workplace culture.
- Demonstrates teamwork, time management and problem solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- A professional attitude and flexibility in work role with a preparedness and ability to participate in after-hours rosters to deliver patient care.
