Junior Medical Officer


Nepean Hospital is an accredited secondment hospital for Paediatrics Training. This position is suitable for those registered or eligible to register as an Advanced Trainee in General Paediatrics with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Those who have already been assessed as substantially or partially comparable overseas trained specialists (OTP) by the OTP Unit of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians require top-up training or peer review in General Paediatrics can also apply. It may be possible to get 12-month top-up training for OTPs accredited for six months each in General Paediatrics and Psychosocial/Community Paediatrics.

What you'll be doing

  • Managing common paediatric problems admitted to the Children’s Ward such as asthma, bronchiolitis, bacterial and viral meningitis, child at risk, pneumonia, epilepsy, febrile convulsion, urinary tract infections, diabetes, obesity complications, growth and developmental problems and social and family problems.
  • Providing medical coverage for the Paediatric Acute Review Clinic (PARC).
  • Providing onsite supervision of the Paediatric Short Stay Unit (PASS).
  • Attending fully supervised paediatric outpatient clinics to gain further ambulatory paediatric experience. These include general paediatrics, immunology, behaviour and diabetes.
  • Participating in 24/7 rotating roster of days, evenings, nights and weekends.

Where you'll be working

  • Participating in 24/7 rotating roster of days, evenings, nights and weekends. Nepean Hospital has a 24 bed Paediatric Ward, a level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Special Care Nursery and a 24 bed Post Natal Ward.
  • The Department is staffed by 11 Paediatricians including 5 VMO’s, 3 Clinical Academics and 6 Staff Specialists (General Paediatric, Endocrine and Developmental Medicine), 2 General Paediatric Clinical Fellows, 10 Paediatric Trainees and 6 Residents.
  • The Department of Paediatrics is accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and has previously been host to the RACP Fellowship clinical examinations.
  • The department runs annual mock RACP clinical exams.

Essential requirements
  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
  • Demonstrated clinical practice as a registered medical practitioner in the last 2 years in a setting appropriate to the needs of the position.
  • Currently registered or eligible to register as an Advanced Trainee in General Paediatrics with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or already assessed as a substantially or partially comparable overseas trained specialist by OTP Unit of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians requiring top training or peer review in General Paediatrics.
  • Completion of a minimum 12 months paediatric experience in the last 2 years in a large paediatric unit.
  • Demonstrated experience and training in paediatric procedural and advanced resuscitation skills including venepuncture, cannulation, bladder catheterisation, lumbar puncture, intubation and hand ventilation.
  • This position is subject to an appropriate supervision level which can be supported by the health agency. If the incumbent’s registration conditions include supervision requirements, the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role.
  • Valid Working with Children Check, cleared National Police Check.
  • To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy, this includes any amendments made from time to time.

  1. Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.
  2. Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
  3. Demonstrated experience and training in paediatric procedural and resuscitation skills including venepuncture, cannulation, bladder catheterisation, lumbar puncture and hand ventilation.
  4. Adept ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.
  5. Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences.
  6. Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development and self-education.
  8. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
