Where you'll be working

Wollongong Hospital is the Illawarra and Shoalhaven’s major referral and teaching hospital and has a bed base of more than 500. The campus, which incorporates the Illawarra Regional Cancer Care Centre, provides a comprehensive range of inpatient, outpatient and community-based services.

Shoalhaven Hospital is a busy rural hospital which employs over 1,000 staff and is the main acute care hospital for the Shoalhaven region, providing emergency care, medical, surgical and orthopaedic services.  Shoalhaven Hospital has an Intensive Care Unit focusing on high dependency and coronary patients, Children’s Ward and Maternity Unit as well as a purpose-built regional Cancer Care Centre and sub-acute Mental Health Unit. Shoalhaven Hospital is currently undergoing a $438 million redevelopment.

What you'll be doing

The Illawarra Sexual Health Service provides training for RACP Advanced Trainees in Sexual Health Medicine. The training program includes clinical experience in the diagnosis and management of sexually transmissible infections, HIV and hepatitis C; reproductive health including contraception and medical termination of pregnancy; gender affirming care for transgender clients; genital dermatology; sexual function; and forensic examination and after care for sexual assault. Our Advanced Training position is supported by the RACP Specialist Training Program (STP) which provides additional funding for trainees for professional development, relocation to a regional area and other infrastructure costs.
 
The service also provides opportunities for general practitioners who wish to enhance their practice in the above areas, or final year GP trainees interested in a Special Skills post.
 
You will work in a multidisciplinary team with nurses and allied health practitioners. You will be expected to attend clinics in Wollongong, Port Kembla and Shoalhaven on a regular basis. There will be opportunities to undertake some interdisciplinary teaching and research. Close liaison with Public Health and Infectious Diseases is expected. There is no in-patient responsibility however you will be expected to provide advice to other health professionals in community clinics and the hospital setting particularly in relation to the management of sexually transmissible infections including HIV.

Selection Criteria

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Enrolled, or intending to enrol, in the RACP Sexual Health, Infectious Diseases or other relevant Advanced Training Program, not essential for GPs seeking enhanced skill development
  3. Excellent communication skills - written and verbal
  4. Ability to communicate with patients from a wide range of culturally and linguistic backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and members of the LGBTQI community
  5. Interest or experience in medical education and research
  6. Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
  7. Class C driver's license
