Where you'll be working
This position is based in Western Sydney Local Health District and will be located between Blacktown and Mt Druitt Hospitals

What you'll be doing
The primary purpose of the Advanced Trainee in the Emergency Department at Blacktown-Mt Druitt Hospitals is to provide clinical care, under appropriate supervision, to patients requiring emergency medical services in a complex clinical environment. This includes both Adult and Paediatric patients. 
This position will provide experience in a critical care environment and have responsibilities and opportunities for autonomous practice commensurate with the level of experience of the incumbent. 
The Advanced Trainee is expected to supervise and also participate in teaching Junior Medical Officers and Medical Students, and taking part in research where appropriate. 
This Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) accredited position, with 90,000 mixed presentations across the Blacktown and Mt Druitt Emergency Departments. Education is a strong focus, with a Simulation Room in-situ. 
WSLHD has received accreditation by Australian Medical Council (AMC) for the AMC-WBA( Workplace-Based Assessment) program at Blacktown & Mt Druitt Hospitals. 

Blacktown-Mt Druitt Hospital Emergency Departments are part of Network 5 of the NSW Training Program. The hospitals within this Network are Westmead, Nepean, Blacktown, Tweed, Mt Druitt, Auburn, Orange and Children's Hospital Westmead.   

The Advanced Trainee in Emergency Medicine may be rotated to any one of the following hospitals:
  • Westmead Hospital
  • Nepean Hospital
  • Westmead Children's Hospital
Other rotations available include: simulation, toxicology, ultrasound, paediatrics, anaesthetics, psychiatry and medicine/surgery. 

Appointment is subject to registration as a trainee with the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM). For international graduates, completion of Visa and Registration applications is required within 3 months with an expectation for commencement of duties within 6 months following a Letter of Offer.
  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the medical board of Australia in an appropriate registration category (or eligible to register with the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine for a Short Term Training STT position). Additionally for IMGs, evidence of satisfactory completion of English language proficiency is required to be provided at the time of the application.
  2. Registered or eligible for registration as an Advanced Trainee with the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) upon commencement of the position.
  3. At least a minimum of 3 years full time postgraduate experience (or part time equivalent), including 12 months experience in an Australian Emergency Department or equivalent (not as an observer).
  4. Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team with an understanding of the roles of the doctor and other members of the healthcare team.
  5. Ability to recognise the acutely unwell patient and to initiate immediate management and institute Basic Life Support. Completion of ALS training, or willingness to complete in the first 3 months of appointment.
  6. Excellent organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
  8. Ability and willingness to work at the facilities within the Network to deliver patient care and preparedness and ability to participate in 24-hour shift work roster.
