Junior Medical Officer


Public Health provides health protection services to the population of NBMLHD, including notifiable disease surveillance, communicable disease outbreak investigation and control, immunisation activities (including the delivery of the NSW School based Vaccination Program), environmental health risk investigation and management, and public health disaster preparedness and management. These activities are underpinned by statutory obligations in relation to the Public Health Act 2010, the Public Health (Tobacco) Act 2008, and the Smokefree Environment Act 2000.

What you'll be doing

  • Undertaking specific public health projects, which are both part of the routine work of the public health unit and which wholly or partially fulfil the competency requirements of AFPHM trainees.
  • Assisting public health staff in the investigation of disease outbreaks and public health responses to prescient public health risks.
  • Contributing to the implementation of public health policies and programs within NBMLHD.
  • Contributing to the development and analysis of public health surveillance systems in NBMLHD
  • Contributing to the development of local and State public health policy and activities.
  • Participating in public health research and research report writing.
  • Participating in the on call after-hours roster for public health medicine

Where you'll be working

  • The Public Health Unit is located in a modern office building in the heart of Penrith, next to the train station and Westfield shopping centre and within a 50 minute drive from the Sydney centre.
  • The Unit covers a broad geographical area, from St Marys in the East to Lithgow in the West and Richmond in the North, encompassing urban and rural areas, the Nepean river as well as the bushland setting of the Blue Mountains National Park..

Essential requirements
  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
  • Master of Public Health or equivalent degree.
  • Have received written confirmation from the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine of eligibility to commence Advanced Public Health Training or demonstrated commitment to commence training.
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in public and population health.
  • Evidence of high level written and verbal communication skills with a variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Evidence of high level computer literacy skills, including advanced word processing, spreadsheets, databases and other software.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to other facilities of NBMLHD and other LHDs. 
  • Valid Working with Children Check, cleared National Police Check.
  • To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy, this includes any amendments made from time to time.
