Centre for Population Health (CPH)
CPH is a business unit within the WSLHD Directorate of Integrated and Community Health (ICH). It provides over-arching leadership, engagement, and strategic direction for population health across the District. We use a preventative, whole-of-population lens to develop and implement health policies and programs to improve the health and wellbeing of the population within WSLHD.
Located within the Cumberland Hospital campus, CPH is supported by approximately 50 full time equivalent staff who deliver population health programs across western Sydney. Our workforce is drawn from a range of disciplines with expertise and skills in public health, health promotion, health equity, epidemiology, applied research, program development and evaluation, social marketing and communications, community engagement and capacity building.
We have a diverse, evidence-based program of work, with priorities determined by State and Commonwealth strategic directions, the District’s Strategic Plan, local data and needs.
The CPH includes public health and health promotion services, as well as staff who support the essential functions of business operations and administration, strategy, planning and engagement.
Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD)
The WSLHD is responsible for providing primary and secondary health care for people living in the Cumberland, Blacktown, The Hills Shire, and Parramatta Local Government Areas (LGAs) and tertiary care to residents of the Greater Western Region. The major facilities include: Auburn Hospital, Cumberland Hospital, Blacktown-Mount Druitt (two campuses) hospitals and Westmead hospital.
The WSLHD is a culturally and linguistically diverse community that is growing rapidly. In 2021, our estimated population in WSLHD is 1,052,990. The District’s population is expected to grow to 1.2 million by 2030, and is one of the fasted growing populations in NSW. In 2021, our Aboriginal population accounted for approximately 1.6% of the District’s population (3.6% in NSW, which includes rural and remote populations). In 2021, 49.9% of the District’s residents were born overseas (NSW: 31%); 54.3% of local residents spoke a language other than English at home (NSW: 28.2%).
What you'll be doing
WSLHD - Advanced Trainee - Public Health
Advanced trainees in this position will have an opportunity to be exposed to a broad range of experiences in surveillance of infectious diseases in laboratory and public health unit settings, communicable disease control, role of microbiological techniques in disease surveillance and outbreak response, immunisation, environmental health, public health legislation and regulatory roles, health promotion, injury and chronic disease prevention and in the evaluation of the effectiveness of health care.
This position is located at the Centre for Population Health (CPH), Cumberland Hospital and based in the Public Health Unit service. It is a specialist Public Health Medicine training position and has been accredited by the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine (AFPHM).
A key role of this position is contributing to the public health response communicable disease and environmental risks in WSLHD. This includes undertaking risk assessments, case investigation, contact tracing, managing the response to outbreaks, supporting public health responses in high-risk settings (schools, aged care, childcare and workplaces) and supporting surge capacity workforce.
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Masters of Public Health Degree or equivalent
- Have received confirmation from the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine of eligibility to commence Advanced Public Health Training.
- Knowledge or experience in public health principles and practice, in particular the Faculty’s core discipline areas of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health protection (including communicable disease prevention and control and environmental health), Health Promotion, and Health Policy, planning or management.
- Current Drivers Licence valid within Australia.
- Evidence of high-level written and verbal communication skills with a variety of audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a multidisciplinary team.
- Evidence of high level computer literacy skills, including advanced word processing, Spreadsheets, databases and other software.
