Junior Medical Officer


The Nepean Sexual Health Clinic is known to be an exciting, well supported and friendly clinic with excellent supervision and a broad range of training opportunities. We have full accreditation with the Chapter of Sexual Health Medicine for Advanced Training and have rotations not only in HIV and STI medicine, but also in Forensic Sexual Assault Medicine, Public Health Medicine and Reproductive Health at FPNSW Penrith.

The Advanced Trainee in Sexual Health Medicine will also have access to educational opportunities given to Advanced Trainees in other disciplines as we are a part of the Division of Medicine. There is one Advanced Trainee at this site and you will have access to two staff specialists in Sexual Health and be expected to provide supervision to one junior medical officer.

What you'll be doing

  • Delivering clinical sexual health services to target populations as specified by the NSW HIV, STI and Hepatitis C Strategies. These services will be provided within the Sexual Health Clinic, Needle and Syringe Program and the Public Health Unit.
  • Delivering holistic sexual health medicine service to the NBMLHD population.
  • Gaining advanced knowledge and competence in HIV, STI and viral hepatitis management.
  • Gaining advanced knowledge and competence in reproductive health, genital dermatology, transgender health and sexual dysfunction. Some of these skills may be gained in the private sector and at non-government agencies to a maximum of four hours per week.
  • Gaining advanced knowledge and competence in general medicine, public health, forensic medicine and harm minimisation where it relates to the care of patients with sexual health morbidity.
  • Participation in the sexual assault forensic medicine after hours roster.

Where you'll be working

  • You will provide outpatient care as well as consultation for inpatients from other departments.
  • Blue Mountains Sexual Health Clinic is located in Katoomba. If desired, you will have the opportunity to experience clinics in a regional setting.
  • After satisfactory completion of training and supervision in forensics you will be expected to participate in the after-hours roster.
  • After completion of your FPAA Certificate in Reproductive Health, you will work one day a week at FPNSW Penrith clinic.
  • Rotation into the Public Health Unit is offered to interested Advanced Trainees.
  • Nepean Hospital is only 45 minutes by train and drive against peak hour traffic from the inner west of Sydney. There is plenty of onsite and offsite parking.

Essential requirements
  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
  • Demonstrated clinical practice as a registered medical practitioner in the last 2 years in a setting appropriate to the needs of the position.
  • Completion of a minimum four years postgraduate experience.
  • Completion of RACP Divisional Clinical Exam or Fellowship of another College or Faculty of another Chapter and eligible to commence Advanced Training.
  • This position is subject to an appropriate supervision level which can be supported by the health agency. If the incumbent s registration conditions include supervision requirements, the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role.
  • Valid Working with Children Check, cleared National Police Check.
  • To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy, this includes any amendments made from time to time.

  5. Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development and self-education.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
