Shifts rotate between days, evenings and nights. The Trainee is part of the multidisciplinary team involving staff from all health professions, clerical and support staff. The Children’s Hospital at Westmead (CHW), is a tertiary children's hospital within The Sydney Children's Hospitals Network, affiliated with the University of Sydney. CHW is a level-one trauma centre, the state burns centre and accepts a large number of critically ill children. The Critical Care Rotation may include six month terms in the Emergency Department, the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit and the NSW Newborn and paediatric Emergency Transport Service (NETS) with specific training tailored for Advanced Trainees wishing to further their experience and skills in the care of critically ill infants and children. The successful completion of training in the Critical Care Rotation may serve as a stepping stone into a subsequent specialised fellowship. Term combinations are tailored to suit each individual trainee’s requirements and may be adjusted during the year should the need arise. The final decision regarding term allocation lies with the heads of the individual departments.

The Emergency Department is busy with over 60,000 presentations per year with a high patient acuity. Approx one quarter of the children presenting require hospital admission for further management. The PICU admits over 1,400 children per year; approx one third of the admissions are post-operative cardiac surgical patients. The remainder of children have acute medical or surgical conditions requiring intensive care. The NSW Newborn and paediatric Emergency Transport Service (NETS) is a dedicated service that provides advice, stabilisation and coordination of retrieval for over 2000 critically ill and injured newborns and children annually. Transport is via road, fixed wing and rotary wing vehicles and is a medically led service.
