An exciting opportunity exists to join the Sexual Health Medicine Department at Wollongong Hospital, Shellharbour Hospital and Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospitals.

Where you'll be working

Port Kembla District Hospital is a 57 bed facility which specialises in Rehabilitation, Aged Care and Palliative Care Services. The hospital also provides a comprehensive range of inpatient, outpatient and community-based services.

Port Kembla, located 10mins from Wollongong, and an hour’s drive south of Sydney on a narrow coastal strip bordered by the Royal National Park to the north, Lake Illawarra to the south, the Tasman Sea to the east and the Illawarra Escarpment to the west.  Learn more about the lifestyle benefits of living and working in and around Wollongong.

 

Please note this is a district position and you will be required to make visits to other hospital sites/clinics within the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District as required. 

 

Wollongong Hospital is the Illawarra and Shoalhaven’s major referral and teaching hospital and has a bed base of more than 500. The campus, which incorporates the Illawarra Regional Cancer Care Centre, provides a comprehensive range of inpatient, outpatient and community-based services.

Shellharbour Hospital is a 197 bed, acute facility providing a comprehensive range of inpatient, outpatient and community-based services. The inpatient services include aged care, medical, surgical, mental health and acute medical assessment inpatient beds, plus a day surgery unit. The hospital also provides emergency services, elective surgical services, general medical, antenatal and primary family health care, satellite renal dialysis, as well as adolescent and adult mental health services.

Shellharbour is located on the picturesque South Coast of NSW, located over an hour’s drive south of Sydney, and has a rapidly growing population. Shoalhaven Hospital is a busy rural hospital which employs over 1,000 staff and is the main acute care hospital for the Shoalhaven region, providing emergency care, medical, surgical and orthopaedic services.  Shoalhaven Hospital has an Intensive Care Unit focusing on high dependency and coronary patients, Children’s Ward and Maternity Unit as well as a purpose-built regional Cancer Care Centre and sub-acute Mental Health Unit



What you'll be doing
The Illawarra Sexual Health Service provides training for RACP Advanced Trainees in Sexual Health Medicine. The training program includes diagnosis and management of sexually transmissible infections, HIV, hepatitis C, long acting contraception, gender affirming care for transgender clients, genital dermatology, sexual function and the forensic examination and after care for sexual assault.


The service also provides opportunities for general practitioners who wish to enhance their practice in areas such as the management of sexually transmissible infection, including HIV, reproductive health including long acting contraception (LARCS0, sexual assault, sexual function, genital dermatology, medical termination of pregnancy and transgender health. 


You will work in a multidisciplinary team with nurses and allied health practitioners. You will be expected to attend clinics in Wollongong, Port Kembla and Shoalhaven on a regular basis. Participation in the sexual assault roster is the only after-hours commitment required. There will be opportunities to undertake some interdisciplinary teaching and research. Close liaison with Public Health and Infectious Diseases is expected. There is no in-patient responsibility however you will be expected to provide advice to other health professionals in community clinics and the hospital setting particularly in relation to the management of sexually transmissible infections including HIV.

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Completion of RACP Basic training or in possession of a relevant Fellowship of another medical college such as RACGP or RANZCOG
  3. Enrolled as a Sexual Health or Infectious Diseases Trainee or other relevant training field in the RACP if applying as an Advanced Trainee, not essential for GPs seeking enhanced skill development
  4. Excellent communication skills - written and verbal
  5. Ability to communicate with patients from a wide range of culturally and linguistic backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and members of the LGBTQI community
  6. Interest or experience in medical education and research
  7. Demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
  8. Class C driver's license
