Opportunity for an Aboriginal person to work and gain a postgraduate degree through the NSW Health Aboriginal Population Health Training Initiative.

The APHTI is a three-year workplace based training program. Trainees undertake part-time study towards a Master of Public Health degree at a NSW university, paid for by NSW Health, and undertake a series of population health work placements. Further information on the APHTI is available here.

This position will build capacity within the Aboriginal workforce to develop and implement population health strategies to protect and promote the health of the people within SESLHD. The Trainee will participate in the NSW Aboriginal Population Health Training Initiative and complete a series of work placements within SESLHD services that provide broad experience of population health practice.

Employment of a temporary visa holder may only occur if no suitable permanent resident or citizen of Australia has been identified for this position following suitable labour market testing.

All workers and new recruits are required to receive 2 doses of a Therapeutic Goods Administration approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccine to commence employment/ engagement or continue to work within a NSW Health service.

A worker and new recruit will be considered compliant if they have a medical contraindication to all available Therapeutic Goods Administration approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccines and provide medical contraindication evidence in line with the policy requirements.

In addition, all Category A workers and new recruits are required to receive one dose of the seasonal influenza vaccine annually to be considered compliant.

Category A workers and new recruits who are non-compliant with seasonal influenza vaccination or have a medical contraindication to influenza or COVID-19 vaccinations must comply with all other infection control risk reduction strategies as directed while working in a Category A position.

  1. Be of Aboriginal or Torres Islander descent (pursuant to Section 14 (d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act (1997).
  2. Sound knowledge of social, cultural, political and health issues affecting Aboriginal people, families and communities and demonstrated understanding of the social determinants of Aboriginal Health.
  3. Meet the admission requirements for the post graduate Master of Public Health degree at a university in NSW.
  4. Demonstrated capacity to achieve workplace learning outcomes.
  5. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain workplace relationships with colleagues, managers, community members and consumers.
  6. Demonstrated oral and written skills relevant computer skills.
  7. Demonstrated ability to implement and prioritise competing tasks according to a service plan and deadline.
  8. Availability to work across the District in a number of workplaces and locations and have a current NSW driver’s licence.
