This position will partake in the examination, diagnosis and management of patients with ophthalmic conditions within the clinical setting, Inpatient care - Management of inpatients in association with consultant medical staff. Daily check of in-patients, Communicate with nursing staff, and orthoptists involved in patient car, Outpatient clinics - Attend Preadmission clinic, meetings and attend clinical/teaching sessions.

Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the medical officer’s skills, knowledge and experience. The medical officer will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO). All patients managed within the hospitals of the health district are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.

The medical officer may be required to work at the different facilities within NBMLHD.

What you will be doing

·       Manage patients with ophthalmology conditions and trauma and be able to take a comprehensive ophthalmic history as well as other relevant history. Ability to present an ophthalmic case history in a succinct manner to consultants.

·       Perform a systematic examination of the eye to diagnose injury and other conditions

·       Interpret ophthalmic imaging modalities including radiographs and CT scans. Developed a basic understanding and interpretation of MRI scans.

·       Appreciation of the social impact of eye injury/ condition on the patient. Understand the role of paramedical staff, administrative, orthoptic and nursing staff in the care and management of the ophthalmic patient. Be able to perform common ophthalmic procedures - applanation tonometry, slit lamp examination, A and B scans. Gain confidence in presentations/ public speaking.

·       Liaise with medical officers and other clinical staff, orthoptists, nursing staff, consultants regarding patient care Manage patients with ophthalmology conditions and trauma.

Essential requirements

  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
  • Recent relevant clinical experience required to undertake the key accountabilities for this role.
  • This position is subject to an appropriate supervision level which can be supported by the health agency. If the incumbent’s registration conditions include supervision requirements, the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role.
  • Valid Working with Children Check, cleared National Police Check.
  • To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy, this includes any amendments made from time to time.


Selection criteria

  1. Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.
  2. Demonstrated clinical practice as a registered medical practitioner in the last 2 years in a setting appropriate to the needs of the position.
  3. Demonstrated ability to manage patients with ophthalmology conditions and trauma and attend pre-admission clinics, determine suitability for surgery, arrange appropriate tests and complete prescriptions for patients undergoing surgical procedures.
  4. Demonstrated ability to perform a systematic examination of the eye to diagnose injury and other conditions, including retinal examination.
  5. Demonstrated ability to interpret ophthalmic imaging modalities including radiographs and CT scans.
  6. Demonstrated ability to present an ophthalmic case history in a succinct manner to consultants.
  7. Demonstrated understanding of the role of paramedical staff – orthoptists, nurses and social workers in the care and management of the ophthalmic patient.
  8. Demonstrated skills to perform common ophthalmic procedures, including applanation tonometry, slit lamp examination, A and B scans
