Where you'll be working

The Auburn Emergency Department sees approximately 33,000 adult and paediatric presentations per year with a varied and interesting case mix. Paediatrics makes up 20 -25% of the presentations. Overall admission rate is 30%.

The department has an Adult and Paediatric short stay unit.

The Emergency Department at Auburn is an accredited site with the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine. It is accredited for 12 months as a non-major referral hospital. The department is also accredited as an ACEM TS4 site.

Rotations include Anaesthetics and Simulation / Education. Rotations to Westmead Emergency are also available.

Auburn Emergency is also accredited for the Paediatric logbook requirement of ACEM training.

The department has a mixture of trainees and CMO’s and has FACEM support 16 hours per day, Monday to Sunday. A consultant is on call at all times to support the Department.

The Department also enjoys good relationships with other inpatient speciality units.

The Hospital has all diagnostic services on site including Plain radiology, CT and Ultrasound.

There is an active education program.  Primary candidates have access to a Network-based preparation program with excellent results.  There is protected teaching on a weekly basis, with an emphasis on Simulation-based education in the new SIM centre at Auburn Hospital.  In addition, there are numerous Network Education Days that trainees are able to attend.  As a consultant group, we are actively involved in all aspects of preparation for the fellowship examination, including statewide days and Network Fellowship days.

Auburn Hospital is a 155 bed acute care health facility, including a 10 bed Close Observation Unit, on the eastern border of West Sydney Local Health District. It is about 11 km from Westmead Hospital. Types of surgery provided at Auburn include General Surgery, Plastics Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, ENT surgery and Orthopaedic surgery. Auburn Hospital has a 24/7 Emergency Department, as well as Special Care Nursery, General Medicine and Surgery.

The Anaesthetic Department provides services for about 9,600 surgical procedures a year, with a large proportion of day surgery patients, and 1,600 deliveries a year in the birth unit. Auburn is a trauma bypass hospital with trauma patients from the area usually taken directly to Westmead Hospital.

Auburn is affiliated with the University of Notre Dame as a teaching hospital for medical students. Auburn patients come from a diverse range of ethnic groups including Middle Eastern, South East Asian, African and Pacific Islander as well as Anglo Saxon. 78% of the Auburn population are from Non-English speaking backgrounds. Interpreter services are readily available.


What you'll be doing

The Unaccredited Trainee works as part of a multi-disciplinary team which includes medical, nursing and allied health professionals. They will work at the trainee level.

The Unaccredited Trainee is directly responsible to the supervising Emergency Medicine Specialist of the day, with overall supervision by the Term Supervisor and the Emergency Department Director.

The Unaccredited Trainee must work effectively with other specialty teams and nursing staff in the wider hospital, to ensure optimal patient care. The Trainee must also interact professionally with clinicians outside of the hospital, including GP’s and community nurses.

Auburn Emergency is accredited for the Paediatric logbook requirement of ACEM training.

Auburn ED is accredited for  & advance training with 16 hours/7 days emergency physician
cover.

Our teaching program is closely linked to Westmead Emergency and has multiple streams dedicated to different requirements including a weekly trainee teaching. There are also skills days throughout the year specific for  trainees and preparation in both the primary and fellowship exam.  

The Training Network
Auburn Emergency Deparment is part of the Network 5 training network that includes Children’s Hospital Westmead ED, Blacktown Mount Druitt Hospital ED, Nepean ED, Westmead ED,  Orange Hospital ED & Tweeds Hospital ED. 

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  2. Must have completed at least two postgraduate years training in an Australian Public Hospital or equivalent (not as an Observer)
  3. Demonstrated ability to work independently in a supervised environment with commitment to self education and continuous professional development
  4. Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team with an understanding of the roles of the doctor and other members of the healthcare team.
  5. Ability and willingness to work at the facilities within the Network to deliver patient care and preparedness and ability to participate in 24-hour shift work roster
  6. Ability to recognise the acutely unwell patient and to initiate immediate management and institute Basic Life Support. Completion of ALS training, or willingness to complete in the first 3 months of appointment
  7. Excellent organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
  8. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
