What you'll be doing
The primary purpose of the role is to develop appropriate knowledge and technical skills to fulfil the requirements of the RCPA for training in Anatomical Pathology and to become a competent Anatomical Pathologist; and to fulfil the service requirements of the department. Duties are likely to include:
  • Assisting consultant Pathologists in the work-up, interpretation and reporting of histo- and cyto pathological specimens
  • Notifying and discussing results with clinicians
  • Laboratory based specimen handling
  • Providing advice to clinicians regarding Anatomical Pathology
  • Attending and participating in multidisciplinary meetings
  • Participating in research

This position is suitable for JMOs with no experience in Anatomical Pathology and applicants with some Anatomical Pathology training experience.

Eligible applicants who are found appointable at interview but are not the preferred applicant for the listed positions may be considered for future vacancies arising in 2025 across the various facilities within the NSW Anatomical Pathology training program.

All laboratories participating in the centralised recruitment process are accredited by the RCPA for specialist Anatomical Pathology training. Many positions are rotational with partner laboratories on a 6-month / 6-month basis. The following training facilities participate in the State-wide NSW Anatomical Pathology Training Program.

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
  2. Evidence of general registration and 24 months of clinical experience OR hold an Overseas Trained Specialist determination issued by the RCPA.
  3. Demonstrated vocational interest in Anatomical Pathology through specific examples (e.g. previous employment, training or research in Anatomical Pathology or related fields; sitting Basic Pathological Sciences exam; attendance in Anatomical Pathology conferences).
  4. Demonstrated understanding of day-to-day working duties and career path of an Anatomical Pathology trainee (e.g. visit to Anatomical Pathology laboratory; discussions with Anatomical Pathology trainees / consultants; exploration of RCPA website NSW Health Pathology website).
  5. Demonstrated participation in quality improvement initiatives relevant to Anatomical Pathology.
  6. Demonstrated experience in working in a multidisciplinary team environment including improvement in patient care and understanding of the NSW Health Code of Conduct.
