Lismore Base Hospital - Richmond Network 

An exciting opportunity is available at Lismore Base Hospital and network sites for a Medicine Trainee. The successful applicant will gain valuable experience in hospitals within the beautiful Richmond Network, working under the supervision and guidance of expert senior clinicians. The Medicine Trainee role offers an ideal year leading into Basic Physician Training where the successful applicant will complete their rotations in General Medicine, Cardiology, Infectious Diseases and Relief.
This is a Temporary Full-Time position for the 2025 Clinical year.

Where you'll be working

Lismore Base Hospital (LBH) is the recognised Trauma Centre for the North Coast Region and is linked with the local helicopter retrieval service.

The hospital is an acute regional referral hospital of 280 beds on the Far North Coast of NSW, serving a population of approximately 170,000 people on the Far North Coast of NSW and has a busy Emergency Department (40,000 presentations annually), ICU and Coronary Care Unit, as well as Surgery (general, orthopaedic and speciality surgery), Paediatrics, Mental Health, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

LBH is an affiliated teaching hospital for medical students from the University of Sydney, University of Wollongong, University of Western Sydney and Bond University. The hospital has a strong commitment to teaching and support for its Junior Medical Officers.

Our region encompasses World Heritage listed rainforests and the pristine beaches of Evans Head, Ballina, Lennox Head and Byron Bay. This area is blessed by year-round sun, a tropical climate and a short winter.  From lush hinterland villages, to Mount Warning, national parks, and sparkling beaches, the region is full of natural wonders and vibrant destinations all within a short drive from Lismore.

What you'll be doing

The primary purpose of the Trainee in Medicine is to provide safe and high quality care, assess and manage, under supervision, Medical patients. The trainee needs to be aware of their limitations and work in a collegiate and collaborate manner.
 
Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the trainee’s skills, knowledge and experience. The medical officer will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO). All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.
 
The position supports meeting the prerequisites for training with the Royal Australian College of Physicians.  It is designed to be an ideal year leading into Basic Physician Training; Trainees in this role will be working alongside Basic Physician Trainees and be included in the local education program.

  2. Adept ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
  3. Adept ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.
  4. Proficient verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences.
  5. Sound ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
  7. Commitment to participating in training and development opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge in the area of Adult Internal Medicine.
