The Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Drug and Alcohol Service offers free, non-judgemental services and treatments for drug and/or alcohol use, including information and support for families. Our service offers specialist drug and alcohol doctors, nurses and allied health staff who respect the client's right to choose from a range of treatments offered with our services underpinned by a philosophy of harm reduction.

The Senior Social Worker, Substance Use in Pregnancy and Parenting Service (SUPPS), will provide a continuum of care to pregnant women and their children during the antenatal and postnatal periods and this will occur within a community setting.

This position will provide specialist counselling and case management support services for patients who use drugs or alcohol and are pregnant or responsible for parenting children under the age of two years old.

What you will bring to the role 

  1. Tertiary qualifications in Social Work and eligibility for membership with the Australian Association Social Workers (AASW).
  2. Extensive post-graduate clinical experience in drug and alcohol counselling as well as in an area such as child protection, domestic violence and/or family relationship issues
  3. Demonstrated experience with using advanced reasoning skills including the preparation of high quality written and oral reports, and comprehensive care plans
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based psychosocial interventions for addressing domestic violence, child abuse or neglect issues and/or harmful patterns of parental substance use. Extensive experience in delivering psychosocial interventions including monitoring of clinical outcomes and responding to risk factors for child protection issues
  5. Demonstrated knowledge and extensive experience in maintaining professional boundaries and ethical practice when working with families and other service providers. Previous experience and a commitment to work within a medically led multidisciplinary team.
  6. Extensive experience in partnering with parents and families to address child protection and well-being issues including reducing the risks associated with harmful patterns of parental substance use
  7. Previous experience with communicating information in a client electronic record system and other computer based applications. Extensive experience in the timely communication and escalation of significant concerns to medical specialists and/or line managers
  8. Current Driver's Licence and willingness to use for work purpose travel.
