Critical Care Senior Resident Medical Officer
Lismore Base Hospital & Richmond Network

An exciting opportunity is available at Lismore Base Hospital and its network sites for a Senior Resident Medical Officer in Critical Care Medicine. The successful applicant will gain valuable experience in our hospitals in the beautiful Northern NSW LHD / Richmond Network, working under the guidance of highly experienced senior clinicians with the opportunity to complete rotations in Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care, and Anaesthetics.

Rotations for this position will include the following terms:

  • 1x ICU Term (Lismore)
  • 1x Anaesthetics Term (Lismore or Grafton)
  • 1x Emergency Term (Base Hospital - Lismore or Grafton)
  • 1x Emergency Term (Peripheral Hospital - Ballina or Casino)

LBH supports the education and career progression of its Junior Medical Officers by:

Education: Lismore ED offers weekly education sessions including simulation, clinical skills, case reviews, and buddy shifts with FACEM. SRMOs are supported by EMET Lismore Hub providing access to multiple workshops including paediatric emergencies, procedural skills, ultrasound and airway management. The Anaesthetics Department is an ANZCA accredited training site which offers weekly teaching for its JMOs including formal training, teleconferenced tutorials and monthly simulation sessions held at the simulation centre at UCRH or in theatre.

Career Progression: Following your SRMO year, you can progress to Intensive Care Training, or Emergency Medicine Training with opportunities to undertake 24 months accredited time across training stages 1 to 3, and training stage 4 at LBH ED, plus opportunities to rotate to ACEM accredited terms in Retrieval, Anaesthetics, ICU, Medical Education and Ultrasound.



About Lismore Base Hospital / Richmond Network

Lismore Base Hospital (LBH) is the recognised Trauma Centre for the North Coast Region and is linked with the local helicopter retrieval service.

The hospital is an acute regional referral hospital of 280 beds on the Far North Coast of NSW, serving a population of approximately 170,000 people on the Far North Coast of NSW and has a busy Emergency Department (40,000 presentations annually), ICU and Coronary Care Unit, as well as Surgery (general, orthopaedic and speciality surgery), Paediatrics, Mental Health, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

LBH ED also supports Richmond Network hospitals including Ballina District Hospital (18,000 presentations per annum) and Casino Memorial District Hospital (14,000 presentations per annum), and Multipurpose Centres located at Kyogle, Nimbin, Urbenville and Bonalbo. 

Grafton Base Hospital is a rural community hospital providing a wide range of accessible healthcare to the public. 

LBH is an affiliated teaching hospital for medical students from the University of Sydney, University of Wollongong, University of Western Sydney and Bond University. The hospital has a strong commitment to teaching and support for its Junior Medical Officers.

Our region encompasses World Heritage listed rainforests and the pristine beaches of Evans Head, Ballina, Lennox Head and Byron Bay. This area is blessed by year-round sun, a tropical climate and a short winter.  From lush hinterland villages to Mount Warning, national parks, and sparkling beaches, the region is full of natural wonders and vibrant destinations all within a short drive from Lismore.



What you'll be doing
The primary purpose of the Senior Resident Medical Officer (SRMO) in Critical Care is to provide clinical care, under appropriate supervision, to patients requiring emergency, intensive care, anaesthetic or medical services in a complex clinical environment.  This position will provide experience in a critical care environment and have responsibilities and opportunities for autonomous practice commensurate with the level of experience of the incumbent.
 
Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the trainee’s skills, knowledge and experience.  All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.
 
The position supports meeting prerequisites for future training with the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine, the College of Intensive Care Medicine and the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists.

  3. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team with an understanding of the roles of the doctor and other members of the healthcare team.
  4. Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, family members and other members of the health care team.
  5. Good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
  7. Evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to self-education, training and development opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge in the area of Critical Care.
