The John Hunter Hospital is the principal referral centre and tertiary hospital for Newcastle, and Northern New South Wales, Australia.

The 796 bed hospital is the main teaching hospital of the University of Newcastle. The hospital contains the only trauma centre in New South Wales outside the Sydney Metropolitan Area and has the busiest emergency department in the state. 

John Hunter is the busiest trauma hospital in the state, and the second-busiest in the country; and the only regional hospital to house all the surgical subspecialties.

What you'll be doing
The Senior Registrar will provide care to patients under the supervision and guidance of consultant staff whilst undertaking a comprehensive training program in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
 
The primary purpose of this position is to contribute to high quality surgical intervention in Cardiothoracic surgical pathology management whilst also providing expert care and clinical advice to patients, carers, and other health care professionals.
 
The Senior Registrar will have completed advanced training to become a specialist medical practitioner in Cardiothoracic Surgery. The Senior Registrar in Cardiothoracic Surgery will provide high quality clinical care, diagnostic and consultative specialty services in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the level of a Senior Registrar and participate in teaching, research, quality improvement and administrative activities within the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department at John Hunter Hospital and HNELHD as required. They will ensure high standards of professional performance and contribute to an academic environment which supports education, research and professional development and will require a degree of flexibility and ability to manage competing demands on time, including being available and on call to support and manage patients with cardiothoracic surgical pathology requiring emergency management within the HNELHD.
  
Mandatory requirements of this role include:
·       The provision of contemporary and professional high quality clinical care, diagnostic and consultative specialty services in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the level of a Senior Registrar.
·       Participate in teaching, research, quality improvement, clinical audit and administrative activities within the department at John Hunter Hospital.
·       Attendance and availability during rostered work hours and whilst on-call (if applicable) including clinical handover, clinical supervision, teaching and for emergency and routine care as determined and required by HNELHD.
  1. Demonstrated current Cardiothoracic Surgery clinical practice of a high standard consistent with the role of a Senior Registrar, with ability to adapt clinical practice in accordance with contemporary evidence based practice.
  2. Evidence of being a scholar, including a demonstrated commitment to undertake and complete the required Senior Registrar training program, actively contribute to research activities and the ability to supervise and train junior medical staff
  3. Evidence of being a skilled communicator, including both oral and written skills, communicating with patients, students, other health professionals and the public.
  4. Evidence of being a collaborator, including the ability to network and operate within an interdisciplinary framework and to work with other stakeholders in a variety of settings.
  5. Evidence of being a professional, including continued professional development, peer review and other forms of clinical governance.
  6. Evidence of being an advocate, including contributions to improving individual and societal health and maintaining a patient centred approach to the provision of care.
  7. Evidence of relevant technical expertise undertaking surgery and procedures appropriate to a Senior Registrar’s training, skills, expertise and the available facilities including equipment, team, conditions and staffing,
  8. Demonstrated ability to comply with the service objectives of the Hunter New England Local Health District, including the provision of services to local community, effective use of resources, preparedness to participate in provision of health services at District level, if credentialed.
