About the Opportunity

Tissue Pathology & Diagnostic Oncology, ICPMR Westmead is one of the largest public Anatomical Pathology laboratories in NSW providing team members the opportunity for broad exposure, collaboration and training and to make a meaningful contribution to patient care. The AP laboratory has a new dissection area with plans for further laboratory redevelopment. TPDO, whilst being a very busy department, has a culture of teamwork and support and a focus on patient care. The department works closely with LHD Clinicians and Pathologists in Sydney and across NSW.

What you'll be doing
Responsible for the management of scientific and technical staff, all testing and associated activities and logistics for the assigned laboratory. The position oversees the quality, cost and operational integrity of the laboratory, regulatory compliance and accreditation of laboratory services, human resource, business and resource management.

  1. Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification, with subjects relevant to Anatomical Pathology from a recognised tertiary institution.
  2. Demonstrable competencies in a high throughput diagnostic Anatomical Pathology laboratory including but not limited to tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, H&E staining, special stains, frozen sections, troubleshooting, quality control and quality assurance, method and equipment optimisation, validation and verification. 
  3. Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers, patients and clinical and laboratory staff, along with report writing skills, statistical evaluation of scientific data and the ability to effectively communicate policies and procedures
  4. Demonstrated leadership, teamwork, organisational and managerial skills with experience in laboratory operations, administration, budgeting and people management.
  5. Demonstrated managerial skills with experience in laboratory operations, administration and budgeting
  6. Advanced knowledge of Pathology Laboratory Information Systems including supervision of e-based Quality Management Systems
  7. Extensive high level knowledge of working within the relevant section of the laboratory with knowledge of the operation and maintenance of analytical equipment in a pathology laboratory
  8. Sound understanding of legislation, policies and requirements that impact the laboratory environment including work health and safety and privacy requirements
