What you'll be doing
Since its inception, research undertaken at the Kids Neuroscience Centre (KNC) has positively impacted more than 4000 families with rare neurological and neuromuscular conditions.
The Centre operates a research-based diagnostic service providing these families with precise genetic diagnoses, expert clinical care and disease-specific treatments and therapies as well as clinical trials. The Centre is based within the Division of Research of the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network, Westmead Campus, NSW, Australia, but has an all-age research remit and is affiliated with the Discipline of Child and Adolescent Health, The Children's Hospital at Westmead Clinical School of the University of Sydney.
The primary purpose of a research officer is to contribute actively to the provision of high-quality research activities, production of and/or contribution to research data and written preparation for conference presentations, manuscripts and funding applications. This role will be part of the Epilepsy Research Team under KNC.
Malformations of cortical development (MCD) are associated with severe, drug-resistant focal epilepsy and neurocognitive comorbidities in children. About half of MCD cases result from somatic gene variants only detectable after surgery, limiting presurgical treatment options, while the other half remain genetically unexplained, highlighting the need for new gene discoveries.
A/Prof Gill and his team—including Dr Kothur, Prof. Sandra Cooper from the Kids Neuroscience Centre, and Prof. Hildebrand from the University of Melbourne and Melbourne Brain Centre —are developing advanced tools using high-depth capture-based gene panels and RNA sequencing for presurgical genomic diagnosis in children. This innovative approach will enhance personalised treatment and help identify molecular pathways in unexplained cases. Our goal is to develop integrative, presurgical, clinicopathologic and molecular diagnoses to identify targeted therapeutics as an option before, in conjunction with or following respective neurosurgery for children who continue to have postoperative seizures.
