The Youth Drug and Alcohol Services (YDACS) team brings together professionals from a range of health disciplines to work together in support of young people aged 12 to 24 years old. The YDACS program is entering a phase of expansion, and this position is part of that program growth. It means strong ties to the Youth Clinical Liaison team at the John Hunter Hospital and enhanced connections to existing and emerging community services, building YDACS’ capacity to connect with respond to alcohol and drug-related support and treatment needs among young people and their families in the Hunter New England Health District.
About the role:
The successful candidate will be delivering therapeutic psychological interventions to young people with moderate to severe substance use presentations. In some cases, this will involve responding to the needs of young people who present with a very high degree of complexity in their lives and have significant health issues. This will be done as an integrated part of the YDACS multidisciplinary team. The position also involves working across other DACS programs at the James Fletcher and John Hunter Hospital campuses, and as the service builds its geographical reach, supporting other parts of the District via virtual delivery of care and support to regionally based DACS staff.
The successful candidate will participate in weekly intake and clinical reviews, daily team huddles and monthly team meetings. They will also have regular peer interaction with DACS staff who share in common the discipline of psychology, as well as individual clinical supervision and support from the service manager. Regular education is provided to all DACS staff and staff are encouraged to pursue opportunities for professional development appropriate to their role.
About you:
As well as excellent therapeutic skills, including practice strength across range of therapeutic modalities, the successful candidate will bring a well developed understanding of harm minimisation approaches relevant to working with young people. The ability to effectively build trust and engage, to work collaboratively with colleagues and external stakeholders and strong problem-solving skills will all be essential qualities of the successful candidate.
Requirements:
- Holds a relevant degree in psychology as detailed in the Position Description, current Authority to Practise as a Psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) with an Area of Practice Endorsement in Clinical Psychology or is eligible to be a Clinical Psychology Registrar, OR currently enrolled in a Master of Clinical Psychology (clinical psychologist in training).
- Eligible to drive in NSW and the ability and willingness to travel for work purposes which may involve driving long distances.
