Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery Provisional Fellow positions are available for the 2026 Clinical Year, commencing from 02 February 2026 to 31 January 2027.

The position involves a clinical role within the Cardiac Service of The Sydney Children's Hospitals Network (SCHN), working at both The Children's Hospital at Westmead (CHW) and Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick (SCH). This position also involves a leadership and educational role and provides an opportunity to develop skills important for a consultant role in the inpatient and outpatient setting, with the support from the Cardiothoracic Surgery Consultants as needed.

The Fellow will work closely with many of the other clinical teams in inpatient and outpatient care both clinically and strategically. The education role includes clinical supervision within the Heart Centre and Cardiac Service more broadly as well as the hospital wide education programs on both sites. Fellows will be required to provide clinical support across SCHN.

The position provides effective service to paediatric patients with increasing autonomy, while developing expertise in surgical practice, in a complex clinical environment. It assists in ensuring that the service provided to patients and their families in New South Wales and beyond is of the highest quality, sustainable, flexible and transparent. The role will develop clinical proficiency in the care of children with congenital heart disease and associated complex health problems.

Selection Criteria:

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.

  2. Registered with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons as an Advanced Trainee or overseas equivalent.

  3. Has completed minimum of 3 years of adult cardiac surgical training and a minimum of 6 months experience in paediatric cardiac surgery within the last 12-18 months.

  4. Technical skills to allow surgical management of emergency situations with cardiac surgery patients (has performed cannulation & decannulation for cardiopulmonary bypass, sternotomy).

  5. Excellent communication, leadership and teamwork skills with demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with other health professionals.

  6. Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development and demonstrated ability to teach, with a willingness to participate in the teaching of Medical Students, Junior Medical Staff and other clinical staff.

  7. Understanding of research methodology or research experience and a willingness to undertake research proposal.

  8. Demonstrated contribution to the development of hospital services e.g. participation in Paediatric Junior Staff matters, representation on behalf of the hospital and participation in Hospital Committee preferable.
