Junior Medical Officer


The Neurosurgical Department at Nepean Hospital provides services to adult patients with a wide variety of neurosurgical conditions. The department also provides emergency care to children who present to the Emergency Department with severe injuries whilst transfer for definitive care is progressed.

Adult conditions that form the majority of the surgical workload are craniotomy for primary or secondary tumours, intracerebral haemorrhage, clipping of cerebral aneurysm, drainage of subdural haematoma, insertion of VP shunt and a complete range of spinal problems requiring cervical lumbar or thoracic surgery. Operations such as ACDF, Laminectomy, Discectomy, and Spinal Fusion are routine. Trauma contributes to the patient load and often includes the requirement for surgical treatment of spinal and cranial trauma. Typical and commonly performed operations include Craniotomy for Haematoma, insertion of EVD, insertion of ICP monitor, and various spinal operations including fixation.

What you'll be doing

  • Preoperative and post-operative care including assessment, organisation of operating list, operating equipment, and booking postoperative care beds.
  • Communicating and coordinating care with their team, arranging consultation with other staff when appropriate, arranging discharge and liaising with local medical officers and other community based care modalities.
  • Outpatient initial review and follow up consults.
  • Participating in the afterhours and overtime roster.
  • Receiving calls for acute referrals from Emergency Department, neighbouring hospitals and General Practitioners.
  • Neurosurgery has a dedicated operating theatre 3 days a week along with the other elective units. There is ample opportunity to attend operating theatre to assist with operations.
  • When appropriate Trainees will be given the opportunity to operate as primary operator under direct supervision of Site Supervisors/delegated senior clinicians as part of skills development.

Where you'll be working

  • Unaccredited Trainees in Neurosurgery will work attached to an elective Neurosurgery Unit at Nepean Hospital.
  • Unaccredited Trainees will be rostered afterhours and participate in outpatient neurosurgical clinics.
  • All terms will be 12 months.

Essential requirements
  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
  • At least three years' postgraduate experience in public hospital service (or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated clinical practice as a registered medical practitioner in the last 2 years in a setting appropriate to the needs of the position with a minimum 12 months of recent Neurosurgical experience in Australasian public hospitals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
  • Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.
  • This position is subject to an appropriate supervision level which can be supported by the health agency. If the incumbent's registration conditions include supervision requirements, the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role.
  • Valid Working with Children Check, cleared National Police Check.
  • To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy, this includes any amendments made from time to time.

Selection criteria
  1. Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.
  2. Demonstrated clinical practice as a registered medical practitioner in the last 2 years in a setting appropriate to the needs of the position with a minimum 12 months of recent Neurosurgical experience in Australasian public hospitals.
  3. Demonstrated commitment to relevant training program and related medical experience in neurosurgery. Working towards completion of relevant College examinations.
  4. Demonstrated ability to competently assist through an operating microscope and be able to perform a burr hole and insert ventricular catheter or ICP monitor independently.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development and self-education.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
