What you'll be doing

The TPDO Research Scientist supports approved research being undertaken by medical and non-medical staff of Tissue Pathology & Diagnostic Oncology. They will work closely with Pathologists and Registrars, TPDO Clinical Director, TPDO Service Unit Manager, Section Heads and laboratory staff. The incumbent will perform a broad range of scientific and technical laboratory work as well as provide administration support to staff undertaking research.

  1. Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification, with subjects relevant to Tissue Pathology from a recognised tertiary institution
  2. Demonstrated experience within a diagnostic Tissue Pathology laboratory supporting and/or performing scientific/medical research tasks
  3. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the delivery of pathology services relevant to the laboratory, including use of Laboratory Information Systems, Patient Systems and Quality Control Systems and computer programs such as Microsoft Office suite
  4. Well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with clinical and laboratory staff, along with report writing skills, statistical evaluation of scientific data and the ability to effectively communicate policies and procedures
  5. Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner and to manage competing priorities to meet deadlines
  6. Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment while working autonomously to deliver results within specified timeframes and contribute to a range of diagnostic skills relevant to the laboratory
  7. Display initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to apply established principles in a pathology laboratory and investigate and resolve general and complex issues within the laboratory environment
  8. Sound understanding of WHS, Patient Confidentiality and working knowledge of pathology accreditation requirements, tissue governance and tracking in the context of research service delivery within a diagnostic laboratory
