 About the role:

This is an exciting opportunity for a Social Worker who has significant experience working with people with an eating disorder and/or complex mental health disorders, and has a passion for being an integral member of a dynamic multidisciplinary team in the development of a new and innovative service model.

The baiyangbaiyaang Level 3 Social Worker will be a member of the multidisciplinary program therapy team to ensure a Social Work perspective is embedded into all aspects of service development and delivery.  

Key responsibilities will include:  

  • Comprehensive and collaborative assessment and care planning, tailored specialist social work interventions and preparation for discharge  
  • Optimising opportunities for psychosocial engagement within baiyangbaiyaang and also through establishing networks and linkages with community 
  • Providing support and supervision of less experienced REDC staff members and consultation/engagement with broader HNE MH Social Work network. 
  • Championing family inclusive practices and providing specialist family work interventions.

 Where you’ll be working:

In 2024 Hunter New England Local Health District will be opening baiyangbaiyaang, a statewide, comprehensive eating disorder treatment service comprising of 2 parts; a Residential Eating Disorders Centre (REDC) which is the first of its kind for NSW and an Eating Disorder Day Program (EDDP). Both will be co-located in the suburb of Charlestown - 15km from Newcastle CBD with good connectivity to the community and transport whilst being nestled in a natural bushland setting within a residential area.

About REDC: This 12 bed, brand new, purpose- built facility will provide an innovative model of care for people 16 years and over, with an eating disorder in a homelike environment. A skilled multidisciplinary team will provide an intensive program of individual and group interventions, using a rehabilitation framework. Interventions will focus on specialist treatment for eating disorders together with addressing psychosocial disruption and overall quality of life.

About EDDP: This service offers a group therapy program 4 days per week and is designed as an adjunct to ongoing care. Clients benefit from meal support at breakfast, morning tea and lunch as well as education and skills-based groups supporting clients to tackle challenges and build a life worth living.

baiyangbaiyaang will be required to operate in conjunction with existing specialised tertiary services, with a broad range of stakeholders, both in public and private sectors. Operationally it will sit within Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD).

This service will be operational 7 days each week with flexible rostering including regular evening and occasional weekend work on a rotating roster. 

About You:

We are looking for someone who is: 

  • Experienced and competent in the treatment of eating disorders with exceptional interpersonal skills and a flexible approach.  
  • Able to work in a collaborative and respectful way, demonstrating warmth and compassion for others.  
  • Confident in the value of Social Work in recovery.  Able to support the establishment of the role of Social Work in this treatment setting whilst also valuing the contributions and perspectives of other professions.  
  • Committed to partnering with clients and families.  
  • Passionate about improving services for people with an eating disorder.  

 Requirements:

  • Must hold a qualification in Social Work and be eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers.
  • Eligible to drive in NSW.
  • Must hold a valid Working with Children Check. 

Additional Information:

  • To be eligible for employment in this position you must be an Australian Citizen, or permanent resident of Australia, or a New Zealand citizen with a current New Zealand Passport, or hold an appropriate visa that allows you to live and work in Australia. Employment of a temporary visa holder will only be offered in line with the conditions and expiry date of your visa. 
  • An eligibility list will be created for future temporary full or part time vacancies.  
  • This position is full time; however, part time arrangements will be considered (minimum 4 days per week). Job share arrangements will not be considered.
