The role

The Health and Security Assistants (H.S.A) in the Emergency Department (ED) have two primary functions

Security
Provide security, safety and protection of all staff, patients and visitors to the unit and if necessary in conjunction with Campus Security Services. Respond to and provide assistance to staff, patients or visitors that may be confronted by a hostile or aggressive person under the direction of the nurse in charge, including the use of approved physical restraint techniques.

Ward Duties
The position is a critical component of the team and it is envisaged that it will support the nurses activities with patients as well as acting independently when required. This includes but is not limited to organising serving of patients meals and drinks for patients, cleaning and making of beds, assisting and maintaining a clean environment, assisting patients with personal hygiene needs as appropriate and when requested by the Nurse in Charge and assisting with the care of deceased patients and their transfer to the morgue.

  1. Understanding of and ability to work in an acute health care setting.
  2. Demonstrated proven ability to function as part of a multidisciplinary team
  3. Ability to perform duties or tasks with minimal supervision.
  4. Excellent Interpersonal Skills
  5. Commitment to assisting in patient care.
  6. Current 1A Security Licence (Security Industry Act 1997) and Senior First Aid Certificate
  7. Understanding of confidentiality with medical information
  8. Knowledge of access control, intruder alarm systems and /or duress alarm systems.
