What you'll be doing

MNCLHD Sexual Assault Service (SAS) provides a 24 hour/7 day culturally safe, integrated psychosocial and medical and forensic service to people who present following concern about sexual assault.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) will use their expert clinical nursing knowledge and skills to provide advanced VAN practice responsibility to clients of the SAS aged 14 years or older and contribute to the development of the MNCLHD. to clients of the SAS aged 14 years or older. The primary purpose of the CNS role is to provide medical and forensic responses and health care (within scope of practice) including crisis responses, non-acute care, and follow-up medical care and health care navigation, integrating nursing care with care provided by SAS psychosocial clinicians. This may be followed by the provision of medicolegal reports to the justice system and expert witness testimony in court. 

The CNS supports the MNCLHD Clinical Director iPARVAN to implement the roles and responsibilities of that role as listed on page 109 of PD2020_006 Responding to Sexual Assault (adult and child) Policy and Procedures.

The CNS will contribute to the development of SAS’s clinical practice; mentor staff; develop their professional skills by participating in training and/or education and advice on caring for victim-survivors of sexual assault with our partners either within the NSW Health System and/or non-health services (i.e. community providers).  The CNS will participate in regular team meetings, strategic planning, quality improvement activities, administrative tasks, and research and education delivery as appropriate, including developing and updating clinical guidelines and workflows.

The CNS may also be required to assist a doctor in the clinical service provision for victims-survivors of domestic and family violence and exploring expansion of scope of practice to provide responses to children aged 13 years and younger who have experienced sexual assault and other forms of child abuse and neglect in line with Violence, Abuse, and Neglect system reforms.

The CNS will participate in the development and implementation of a statewide integrated psychosocial, medical and forensic, domestic and family violence crisis model and participate in the review and implementation of an expanded scope of practice for nurses to respond to violence, abuse, and neglect.

The CNS complies with all NSW Health and MNCLHD policies and procedures and performs all other delegated tasks appropriately and in line with grading and capabilities. The CNS practices in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Professional Standards, Nursing Standards of Practice, Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Professional Standards, Code of Ethics for Nurses, and Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses to deliver professional, competent care in line with public expectations.

This position is a LHD wide position which may involve provision of services, or supporting other clinicians to provide services, across the MNCLHD.

A TALENT POOL MAY BE CREATED FOR FUTURE ROLES AND WILL REMAIN VALID FOR 18 MONTHS.
