As the Aboriginal Health Worker (AHW), you will work collaboratively with healthcare service providers across the District to ensure Aboriginal people have appropriate access to healthcare. You will also provide health promotion and education programs appropriate to the needs of the Aboriginal community, with a primary focus on the Chronic Disease for Aboriginal People Model of Care.

Selection Criteria

  • Must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent (NB applicant’s race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised by Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW) and have demonstrated knowledge of current Commonwealth, State and Local Aboriginal health priorities and ability to effectively and sensitively liaise and communicate with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities and agencies.
  • Hold a minimum Certificate III in Aboriginal Primary Health Care Work (Community Care) or equivalent health training and experience, also a willingness to undertake further education, as required.
  • Well-developed verbal communication skills with an ability to work effectively with a range of health professionals/ service providers/agencies to ensure coordination of care and appropriate allied health and social services referrals for Aboriginal people.
  • Demonstrated computer skills with an ability to maintain accurate and appropriate records in appropriate information systems and collate data in spreadsheets, diaries/calendars, as well as produce routine electronic written correspondence, project plans or educational materials and program reports.
  • Current drivers licence Class C and ability and willingness to travel within the LHD for work purposes.
