The Westmead Health Precinct currently under development is envisaged to be the biggest hospital building project undertaken in Western Sydney and will transform the iconic but ageing Westmead Hospital into an innovative, contemporary and integrated centre that will continue to deliver high quality healthcare and expand the education, health and research capability of the area
Westmead Hospital is a leading centre of research, training and specialisations in all fields of medicine and dentistry, providing services in cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, kidney and pancreas transplantation, cancer care, obstetrics and gynaecology, neonatal intensive care, trauma, bone marrow transplantation, critical care, aged care and rehabilitation, adult acute psychiatry (networked with the co-located Cumberland Hospital) as well as other highly specialised medical and surgical services.
The Westmead Hospital Emergency Department (ED) operates 24 hours, 7 days per week and manages all types and levels of illnesses and injuries. As one of six major trauma centres in the state, the ED also cares for people with the most severe physical injuries.
Westmead Hospital ED presentation numbers are among the highest in the state
Critical care services within Westmead Hospital are provided by the Intensive care unit and the medical and surgical high dependency units. Other specialist services that provide a high dependency level of care for patients within their clinical specialty wards include the Coronary Care Unit, Renal and Pancreas Transplantation and Haematology
Over 120 different outpatient clinics for a number of different specialities and services provide ambulatory care to approximately 5,000 attendances per month.
Westmead Hospital is one of Australia’s largest centres for postgraduate training to specialist levels in all fields with over 100 PhD students and other postgraduate students supervised by Westmead Hospital scientists and clinicians. Westmead is home to internationally recognised institutes of health research, the most prominent being the Westmead Millennium Institute. What you'll be doing
This position is for an accredited ophthalmology trainee proceeding to the final (5th) year of training in Australia or New Zealand to become our Advanced Trainee.
This position will be actively ‘tailored’ to the specific sub-specialty areas of interest and requests of the particular applicant. It will generally include advanced surgical experience in the fields of: cataract, glaucoma, oculoplastics, strabismus and corneal surgery, together with advanced management of patients with medical retinal conditions, including advanced imaging and intravitreal surgery and other therapy. A major trauma unit is also present at the hospital and many ophthalmic referrals are also managed, frequently by the Advanced Trainee, depending on severity. The Advanced Trainee will also take an overview role in prioritising patients for management, based on urgency. The Westmead final-year Trainee position offer an excellent opportunity to consolidate surgical skills, and prepare for later sub-specialty training in a particular surgical area of interest, if this was desired. There are also 9 other trainees at the hospital and 30 consultant staff/VMO, covering all sub-specialty fields. The extent of this very large hospital facility means that we are also focused on the assessment and management of systemic conditions with eye signs, and have a large trauma service.
