About us:

The MERIT Team is a multidiscipline team made up of Nurses, Psychologists, Social Workers, and Administration staff. MERIT provides counselling and case management to clients that are identified as having a drug or alcohol dependency and is involved with the criminal just system.

This is a newly created position which will be based at the Armidale Community Health Centre.

About the role:

The role is to provided support to Aboriginal clients access the MERIT program and work in conjunction with Staff to provide a safe and culturally appropriate service. The successful applicant will be working with clients that have an identified drug use dependence and criminal justice involvement. MERIT is a 12-week program covering 3 local courts - Armidale, Glen Innes and Inverell. Part of the role will also be supporting clients through the Court process while on the MERIT Program.

You will be supported by your direct line manager, Health Service Managers, MERIT colleagues, administration staff and the DACS Aboriginal Manager.

About you:

Ideally the successful applicant will have a sound understanding of the barriers facing Aboriginal Clients accessing mainstream services. Also, knowledge of local Aboriginal services for referral processes would be beneficial.

It is important that you have a non-judgmental attitude and are approachable for clients.

Requirements:
  • To work as an Aboriginal Health Worker, you must hold or aspires to hold a minimum Certificate III qualification in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or a minimum Certificate III health qualification.
  • To work as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner, you must have completed the Certificate IV Aboriginal Primary Health Care (Practice) and registered with (AHPRA) Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Health Practice Board. Support to attain these qualifications will be provided following the appointment to the position.
  • Eligible to drive in NSW and the ability to travel as required.
