What you’ll be doing
The Data Scientist's primary role is to undertake data extraction, exploration, analysis and dissemination of insights to key stakeholders within the Cancer Institute NSW in a timely manner. The Data Scientist will also assist and support other teams within the Cancer Institute NSW by rapidly exploring and appraising new sources of cancer care related data, developing and testing statistical and machine learning models, and by further developing prototype models into automated and scalable tools, dashboards and interactive reports for non-specialist end-users.

In addition to base salary:
- 11.5% superannuation
- 4 weeks annual leave (plus 17.5% leave loading)

Essential requirements
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in statistics, machine learning, computer science or a related discipline.
- Extensive experience in statistics, machine learning, predictive analysis and modelling in R or Python.
- Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (Azure and Snowflake ecosystems) and their applications in data science.
- Knowledge of model deployment techniques, including model serialization and containerization.
- Understanding of model performance metrics (e.g., accuracy, precision, recall) and data drift detection.
- Demonstrated understanding of privacy and health/personal information legislation, policies and standards.
If successful for interview candidates must bring original copies of essential qualifications to be sighted by the panel, and one copy to provide to panel.
Pre-screening questions
- The Cancer Institute NSW wants a system that can detect unusual spikes in cancer incidence using cancer diagnosis notifications data.
Question: What kind of architecture and tools would you use to build this? How would you ensure relevant stakeholders receive timely and accurate alerts? - You've developed a successful predictive model (e.g. for demand forecasting), but the NSW Health IT environment has strict constraints on external libraries and cloud usage.
Question: How would you adapt your model for deployment in a secure and potentially restricted environment? What steps would you take to ensure reproducibility and maintainability?
