The Paediatric Surgical (Junior) Trainee - Unaccredited Position at The Children's Hospital at Westmead (CHW) provides an opportunity for further development of surgical and paediatric skills in the spheres of clinical care, surgical procedures, education and supervision under the supervision of senior Fellows and consultant paediatric surgeons. 
This position is available for the 2026 Clinical Year, from 02 February 2026 to 31 January 2027.

The position is pitched at a Junior Trainee level and is suitable for candidates with a minimum of 18 months surgical experience looking to further their experience in this area. Some paediatric surgical experience is desirable. This position provides effective service to paediatric patients with increasing autonomy, while developing expertise in surgical practice, in a complex clinical environment. The Unaccredited Trainee will assist in ensuring that the service provided to patients and their families in New South Wales and beyond is of the highest quality, sustainable, flexible and transparent. Trainees will develop clinical proficiency in the care of children with complex health problems. It is a requirement of this position to be available to participate in both overtime and on call rosters. 

The junior Trainee - Unaccredited Position at The Children's Hospital at Westmead provides an excellent stepping stone to higher General Surgical or Paediatric training / responsibilities since it brings together:

• supervised clinical exposure to paediatric and general surgery, urology, trauma and burns.
• clinical teaching in common general paediatrics, general surgery, trauma and paediatric surgical conditions,
• scenario based discussions on acute surgical challenges and case simulations led by experienced clinicians,
• opportunities to work in operating theatre environments,
• and/or didactic teaching for RACS primaries or clinical research.

This position is not accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS). 

Selection Criteria:

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
  2. Minimum three years postgraduate experience.
  3. At least 18 months previous surgical experience or equivalent. Paediatric surgical experience and EMST completion are desirable.
  4. Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with other health professionals.
  5. Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development and demonstrated ability to teach, and willingness to participate in the teaching of Medical Students, Junior Medical Staff and other clinical staff.
  6. Understanding of research methodology or research experience and a willingness to undertake research proposal.
  7. Demonstrated contribution to the development of hospital services e.g. participation in Paediatric Junior Staff matters, representation on behalf of the Hospital, participation in Hospital Committees preferable.
  8. Demonstrated skills in time management, prioritisation and problem solving.
