The Paediatric Surgical Unaccredited Trainee position at The Children's Hospital at Westmead (CHW) provides an opportunity for further development of paediatric skills in the spheres of newborn intensive care clinical care, surgical procedures, education and supervision under the supervision of consultant paediatric surgeons and neonatologist.
This is a full time position in which the successful candidate will spend 6 months in the Department of Paediatric Surgery and 6 months in Grace Centre for Newborn Intensive Care, both at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. The position is designed to allow a broad and stimulating exposure to all aspects of paediatric and newborn surgery at a junior trainee level. The Grace Centre for Newborn Intensive Care is a level 6 unit. The Department of Paediatric Surgery is a busy and an apex referral unit for subspecialty surgeries. The Department of Surgery and the Grace Centre for Newborn Care, both deal with a large number of surgical conditions in the newborn.
The position is suitable for candidates with a minimum of 18 months paediatric surgical experience looking to further their experience in this area. This position provides effective service to paediatric patients with increasing autonomy, while developing expertise in surgical practice and newborn intensive care, in a complex clinical environment. The Trainee will assist in ensuring that the service provided to patients and their families in New South Wales and beyond is of the highest quality, sustainable, flexible and transparent. Trainees will develop clinical proficiency in the care of children with complex health problems. It is a requirement of this position to be available to participate in both overtime and on call rosters.
This position is is not accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS).
Selection Criteria:
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- Minimum three years postgraduate experience.
- At least 18 months previous paediatric surgical experience or equivalent.
- Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with other health professionals.
- Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development and demonstrated ability to teach, and willingness to participate in the teaching of Medical Students, Junior Medical Staff and other clinical staff.
- Understanding of research methodology or research experience and a willingness to undertake research proposal.
- Demonstrated contribution to the development of hospital services e.g. participation in Paediatric Junior Staff matters, representation on behalf of the Hospital, participation in Hospital Committees preferable.
- Demonstrated skills in time management, prioritisation and problem solving.
