Eligibility

Applicants are only eligible for these positions if they are graduates of AMC accredited medical schools located predominantly in Australia or New Zealand. 

Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria for the Rural Preferential Recruitment Pathway (RPR) and be successfully registered with HETI, via PTAP, as meeting eligibility requirements as an Intern.

Position 

Positions are currently available for a Rural Preferential Recruit Medical Officers – Intern at Dubbo Health Service. The primary purpose of the Intern is to provide safe and high quality care as a delegate of the specialist consultant involved in management of the patient, at all times making decisions in consultation with their immediate supervisor. You will receive great training, ongoing educational opportunities and fantastic support.

Where you'll be working

Dubbo Health Service is a major rural referral Hospital and part of the Western NSW Local Health District. It provides a range of acute inpatient and ambulatory care services including general medical and surgical, maternity, gynaecology, paediatrics, rehabilitation, critical care, mental health, renal dialysis, oncology, palliative care, hospital in the home and diagnostic services.

The Health Service also offers a wide range of primary and community health services including child and family health services, mental health services and antenatal and postnatal services.

Dubbo Health Service is undergoing remarkable transformations under the Dubbo Hospital Redevelopment project. With Stages 1 and 2 ($91.3 million) complete, the final Stages 3 and 4 ($150 million) will include:

  • A new Emergency Department and Short Stay Unit
  • A new Medical Imaging Unit
  • A new Ambulatory Care Unit
  • A new Dialysis Unit
  • A new Critical Care Floor comprising of:
  • Coronary Care/Stroke Unit
  • Intensive Care Unit
  • Cardiac Catheter Laboratory (and Angiography Laboratory space)
  • A new front of house entry and drop off zone
  • A new Surgical Inpatient Unit
  • A new Cancer Centre
  • A new Front of House entry and drop off zone
  • Upgrade of Women’s and Children’s Community Health; and
  • Additional car parking on campus.

What you'll be doing
The primary purpose of the Intern is to provide safe and high quality care as a delegate of the specialist consultant involved in management of the patient, at all times making decisions in consultation with their immediate supervisor. The Intern needs to be aware of their limitations and work in a collegiate and collaborative manner.

The position supports meeting the requirements for General Registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  1. Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role. (Please address these in your response).
  2. Demonstrated interest in and commitment to the provision of quality healthcare in a rural setting.
  3. Adept ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team with an understanding of the roles of the doctor and other members of the healthcare team in a rural setting.
  4. Adept written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, family members and other members of the healthcare team.
  5. Knowledge and understanding of a rural Doctor's responsibilities concerning patients' privacy and right to confidentiality.
  6. Demonstrated organisational and time management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
  8. Evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to self-education.
