Successful applicants will provide both inpatient and outpatient services at Westmead Hospital in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine and will be expected to participate in the on-call roster. The position has a special focus on provision of consultant services to Bronchoscopy, Lung Cancer Rapid Access Clinics, and will be expected to contribute to the Lung Cancer, TB and Pleural Disease management programs of the Department.

Respiratory and Sleep Medicine services are provided through inpatient and outpatient care at Westmead hospital. The Department has 10.6 FTE Staff Specialists delivering tertiary care across a range of clinical sub-specialties including: interventional bronchoscopy, sleep disorders service, respiratory function laboratory, and ambulatory clinics including general respiratory, respiratory failure, lung cancer, TB, COPD, ILD, cystic fibrosis, severe asthma and ambulatory pulmonary rehabilitation programs (RACS). Ambulatory services comprise a significant proportion of activity, including home ventilation services through ENABLE, RACS and integrated care programs. Preventive services include promotion of smoking reduction and TB screening. Respiratory and Sleep Medicine also takes clinical management responsibility for the Respiratory Close Observation Unit at Westmead Hospital (acute inpatient NIV).

 

The Fixed Term appointment will be for the period 12 May 2025 to 31 January 2026 (9 months).

 

Essential Criteria 

§  Possess or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the RACP or equivalent as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award. Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency.

§  Sound clinical knowledge in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position

§  Sound clinical knowledge in in bronchoscopy, lung cancer services and TB services as demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position.

§  Demonstrated clinical skills in the delivery of ambulatory care services appropriate to the management of lung cancer, pleural disease and TB patients in WSLHD.

§  Demonstrated clinical skills in flexible Bronchoscopy, pleural procedures and thoracic ultrasound. Interventional pleural clinical skills and EBUS / EBUS-TBNA skills are an advantage.

§  Research and Teaching interests in areas aligned with the Departments interests (e.g. physician trainee education and supervision programs; sleep, respiratory failure, bronchoscopy, lung cancer, COPD or cystic fibrosis).

Selection Criteria 

§  Possess or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or equivalent as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award. Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency.

§  Evidence of additional qualifications, skills and/or experience required for specific scope of practice for the specialty

§  Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner including:

o   Proven ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team.

o   Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues.

o   Excellent organisational, supervision and collaboration skills with demonstrated ability to build respectful relationships.

o   Maintaining and developing knowledge, skills and professional performance to the level required for contemporary practice.

o   Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and translation of research into practice to improve patient safety and quality. Familiarity with research concepts and commitment to support basic, applied or clinical research within the Department.

§  Demonstrated ability to manage time and resources efficiently and contributing to the effectiveness and efficiency of the health care system.

§  Demonstrated aptitude for clinical leadership which is evidenced by:
