Successful applicants will provide high quality clinical services in the specialty of Geriatric Medicine in inpatient, outpatient, community and residential aged care settings. High level of commitment to teaching, research, patient safety and quality improvement will be essential. Senior medical staff will ensure high standard of professional performance so to facilitate a clinical and academic environment that nurtures education, research and professional development. Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills are required for the effective performance of this role.

 

The Geriatric Medicine Department at Westmead Hospital provides comprehensive services for patients aged 70 years and above presenting with complex medical comorbidities, cognitive, functional, psychosocial issues. Comprehensive geriatric assessments are conducted by multidisciplinary teams in emergency, acute, rehabilitation, community and residential aged care settings, with the aim to optimise comorbidities and function, and to ensure safe and streamlined transitions of care between different settings. Special programs exist for expedited assessment of elderly patients in emergency  (HOPE Healthcare for Older Persons Earlier), stroke, falls and syncope, cognitive disorders, community based rehabilitation, orthogeriatrics, elderly trauma, perioperative care and aged care psychiatry. The department provides specialized acute stroke care including the availability of 24/7 oncall service for intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular clot retrieval. The department also collaborates with geriatrician and GP VMO at Auburn Hospital Temporary Stay Unit for ongoing care of medically stable patients awaiting residential aged care placement.

Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Staff Specialists (State) Award.

    Selection Criteria

    ·       Possess or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or equivalent as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award.

    ·       Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency.

    ·       Sound clinical knowledge in Geriatric Medicine demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position

    ·       Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner including:

    o  High level interpersonal and communication skills.

    o  Demonstrated ability working within a multidisciplinary team.

    o  Demonstrated commitment to teaching and supervision.

    o  Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and evidence-based best practice.

    ·       Demonstrated ability to manage time and resources efficiently and contributing to the effectiveness and efficiency of the health care system.

    ·       Demonstrated aptitude for clinical leadership which is evidenced by:

    o    Systems thinking and risk-taking aptitude.

    o    commitment to self -care and personal development.

    o    Capacity to maintain personal integrity, tolerate stress and demonstrate resilience.

    o    Commitment to building relationships, leading, and developing others.

    ·       Demonstrated commitment to Education, Training and Research, as applicable to the position
