Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the above position(s) in the Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD). This position will be located at Blacktown Hospital within the Department of Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

A minimum fraction of 0.5 FTE will be offered.

Successful applicants will be able to demonstrate commitment to and success in, building teams in situations translatable to the complex and dynamic environment of a growing, technologically advanced, tertiary Teaching 21st century Intensive Care Unit, such as Blacktown. Apart from delivering clinical excellence in the ICU at the bedside, the hard working, successful applicants should have an interest (and record) in research, as well as teaching.

Blacktown ICU is a tertiary Unit, with around 1500 admissions per year. The case mix is predominantly medical, accounting for the relatively high mean Apache 2 of 20. Reflecting the growth in this geographical area within Sydney, the Unit is expanding very rapidly. Over the last decade the Unit has established an imposing research pedigree, including Unit based as well as interdepartmental and international multi-centered studies. The Unit prides itself on its commitment to teaching ICU trainees, medical students and nursing staff and has ready access to both an insitu as well as a purpose built, state- of- the- art local Simulation Centre.

Applicants must have Australian Fellowship/Specialist Registration at time of applying.

 

Essential Requirements for Appointment

1.    Possess or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine or equivalent as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award. Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency. Must hold a current NSW Environment Protection Authority license (if applicable)

2.    Sound clinical knowledge in Intensive Care Medicine demonstrated   through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position

3.    Proven ability to work in multi- and inter-disciplinary teams with compassions, in a patient focused service.

Successful applicants may be offered a conjoint university appointment within the Faculty of Medicine at the relevant University attached to each facility. The level of academic appointment will be commensurate with the qualifications, experience and scholarship and will be held only during the tenure of the Western Sydney Local Health District appointment. No remuneration is attached to the University appointment. The appointee will be responsible to the University for academic matters and to the District for clinical matters.

Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Staff Specialists (State) Award.

 

Selection Criteria

1.    Qualifications and credentials required for core scope of practice in the specialty. Possess or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine or equivalent as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award. Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency, or be eligible.

2.    Evidence of additional qualifications, skills and/or experience required for specific scope of practice for the specialty.

3.    Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner including:

o    Proven ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team.

o    Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues.

o    Be able to demonstrate mature negotiating skills, including with families and within multidisciplinary settings

o    Excellent organisational, supervision and collaboration skills with demonstrated ability to build respectful relationships.

o    High level interpersonal and communication skills.

o    Demonstrated ability working within a multidisciplinary team.

o    Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and evidence based best practice. Demonstrated commitment to teaching and supervision

o    Display personal attributes necessary for ongoing team building

4.    Demonstrated ability to manage time and resources efficiently and contributing to the effectiveness and efficiency of the health care system. Demonstrate considerable ability to work seamlessly and synergistically across departments as and when required, where this is in the interests of patient care.

5.    Demonstrated aptitude for clinical leadership which is evidenced by:

o    Systems thinking and risk-taking aptitude.

o    Commitment to self -care and personal development.

o    Capacity to maintain personal integrity, tolerate stress and demonstrate resilience.

o    Commitment to building relationships, leading, and developing others.

o    Results and outcome focused.

6.    Commitment to good governance, achieving results and managing risks.

7.    Demonstrated commitment to Education, Training and Research, as applicable to the position.

8.    Evidence of additional qualifications, skills and/or experience required for specific scope of practice for the specialty
