Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Staff Specialist Emergency Medicine for Bathurst Hospital as part of a cohesive Emergency Department team, providing excellent clinical care to patients while contributing to the development of the Emergency Department services and mentoring of trainee medical officers.

Bathurst Hospital serves a population of over 40,000 people and the Emergency Department see approximately 25,000 patients per year with a rate of admission of 35%.  The hospital is a modern campus built approximately 10 years ago with a full perioperative suite including 4 operating theatres (incorporating endoscopy), day surgery and recently installed complete new digital anaesthetic machines and patient monitors. The maternity unit has approximately 500 births per year.  Surgical services include general surgery, orthopaedic (elective) surgery, O&G, urology and ophthalmology.  A 7 bed combined ICU/HDU/CCU supports complex surgery.

What you'll be doing

As head of Department you will be responsible for the professional oversight and leadership of the Emergency Department clinical services and activities; and for high quality administrative management of the Department.

You will strive to provide high quality Emergency services and improve care by being a role model, reviewing and developing care processes, monitoring emerging issues and leading change, especially within a digital hospital environment.  You will work closely and collaboratively with other clinical services; medical nursing and allied health staff, demonstrating strong interpersonal communication and negotiation skills; and familiarity with software applications to facilitate communication and planning in a public health environment.

Administrative roles will include leading service delivery to ensure all clinical, financial, compliance and people targets are met; liaison with other clinical units, and referring hospitals; and maintaining ensuring appropriate patient records and confidentiality are maintained.

You will have responsibility for the Emergency Departments clinical governance by organising peer review audits, Morbidity and Mortality meetings, participation in Credentialing and Clinical Privileges of medical staff, monitoring care outcomes and reporting promptly to the Director of Medical services any significant concerns with quality of care while proactively managing patient feedback.

Management of the Emergency Department workforce will including recruitment and operational management of VMO consultants and Staff Specialists, Registrars and Residents, including, leave management, drug and pathology expenditure; and management of Performance Appraisal and Development for all staff.

You will ensure that there are adequate learning opportunities for team members, including medical students, medical trainees, fellows, senior medical officers and nurses

Importantly you will actively contribute to maintaining a safe workplace that values the health and safety of co-workers, clients and visitors and contribute to developing and maintaining a culture where staff is vigilant to risks to themselves, their co-workers, patients and visitors (including health and safety, business and operational risks).

  1. Australian citizen or permanent resident, or eligible for sponsorship as a permanent resident with medical qualifications eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Fellowship of the Australian College of Emergency Medicine (FACEM) or other specialist recognition as provided for in the Staff Specialist (State) Award or under the Health Insurance Act 1973 to practice as a specialist in emergency medicine.
  3. Demonstrated clinical knowledge and technical expertise in contemporary clinical practice in Emergency medicine.
  4. Demonstrated leadership, including excellent engagement and time management skills and negotiation skills; and a commitment to medical education, staff training and basic research.
  5. Demonstrated ability to innovate, implement and improve patient safety and quality, patient flow and continuum of care.
  6. Demonstrated interpersonal communication (both verbal and written) and familiarity with appropriate software applications both clinical and administrative or ability to quickly utilise new applications.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to the CORE values of NSW Health.
