About the Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity- for an Aboriginal clinician to join a diverse team specialising in Peri-infant Mental health (PIMHS).

Our Multidisciplinary team consists of Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social workers, Registered Nurses/Midwives and Clinical Nurse Consultants. We are supportive and encouraging of each other and welcome new colleagues openly.

SWSLHD operates it’s services on the lands of the Dharawal Darug and Gundungurra people and has a rich history of working alongside local Aboriginal communities and our districts Aboriginal Health Unit. We are a district that is committed to supporting you grow and develop your skills. You will be provided with cultural supervision, participate in cultural strengths mapping and form part of a larger, supportive Aboriginal workforce. Our Mental Health Service has a large and well-supported team of Aboriginal Mental Health workers and clinicians who are led by an Aboriginal Mental Health Coordinator.

The successful candidate will be based at across our service in Liverpool, Campbelltown and Bankstown as our service is district-wide!

What You'll be Doing
The primary role of this position is to provide culturally appropriate, recovery orientated evidence based assessment and interventions to clients of the mental health service who identify as Aboriginal and their families.

Working within the multi-disciplinary team process, the position will also undertake mental health promotion and community liaison tasks in support of the development of culturally appropriate mental health services within SWSLHD.

  1. This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent through parentage, identify as an Aboriginal person and/or Torres Strait Islander and be accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
  2. Current Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Registered Nurse or Current Registration with AHPRA as an Occupational Therapist or A Bachelor degree in Social Work which provides eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers or Current Registration with AHPRA as a Psychologist or  A Bachelor degree in Health Science (Mental Health) through the Charles Sturt Graduate program.
  3. Demonstrated experience delivering culturally appropriate, evidence based, recovery orientated mental health interventions in Aboriginal communities.
  4. Ability to work independently and in consultation with the multidisciplinary team.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to the philosophy and practice consumers’ families and natural supports participating within the treatment process, as appropriate and in accordance with the NSW Mental Health Act 2007.
  6. Effective interpersonal skills, problem solving skills and personal resilience.
  7. Highly developed written and verbal communication skills and competence in the use of information technology systems.
  8. Demonstrated knowledge and ability to implement the quality improvement process.
  9. Demonstrated commitment to evidence based practice and professional development.
  10. Must possess a valid Australian Drivers Licence (excluding learner driver's licences). If not already in possession, a NSW Drivers Licence must be obtained within 3 months of appointment.
