About the Role 

Formed in 1882, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH) is a major metropolitan tertiary referral hospital and a principal provider of specialist healthcare. It remains one of the nation’s most respected hospitals, with a distinguished history serving the health needs of local, statewide, national and international communities.

  

The Magistrates Early Referral Into Treatment (MERIT) program is a voluntary, pre-plea program for adults in the Local Court who have issues related to their alcohol and other drug use. MERIT provides access to a wide range of alcohol and other drug treatment services for 12 weeks while court matters are adjourned. MERIT has operated since 2000 and is currently available at 62 of the 137 Local Courts in NSW, locally at Burwood and Newtown Courts. 

  

This position provides high quality clinical and case management services to clients in order to ensure provision of optimal health outcomes for clients of the Magistrates Early Referral into Treatment (MERIT) Program . This position delivers interventions for people with substance use issues referred by Local Courts to MERIT, over a determined period, with a requirement to provide written and oral reports for the clients remaining under Court supervision throughout the duration of the Program.

Ideal Candidate 

  • Must hold a Bachelor or post graduate degree in:
    • Social Work that provides eligibility for full membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers OR
    • Tertiary qualifications in psychology and be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) in Psychology OR
    • Qualifications recognised for employment as a Counsellor or Welfare Officer under the NSW Health Service Health Professionals (State) Award. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills and clinical experience in counselling and case management practice and the provision of services to clients seeking treatment for substance use and related issues. 
  • Current NSW Driver's Licence (P1 and P2 acceptable).
