The Role
The Clinical Nurse/ Midwife Consultant is a Registered Nurse/Midwife who has responsibility for:
1) providing leadership, education, mentoring and supervision of midwives involved in the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care of women with hypertension in pregnancy (the commonest medical complication of pregnancy). This will ensure that midwives caring for hypertensive pregnant women are familiar with and follow the current detailed protocols of management. It will require close liaison with the NUM of the maternity ward to ensure the necessary education and supervision of these midwives. It will also provide a readily available clinical resource to whom practising clinicians (both midwifery and junior medical staff) can refer. The CMC will also contribute to updating the protocols for hypertension in pregnancy as needed.
2) Continuing to undertake clinical research studies in hypertension in pregnancy currently underway, and in the future, in the Department of Women’s Health, supervise students completing research within the Department, to coordinate multicentre trials based at St George Hospital, including liaison with, and supervision of, research midwives at other hospitals involved in these studies, and to encourage midwives to be involved in research and the pursuit of evidence-based clinical practice.

Selection Criteria
- Current Authority to Practice as a Registered Nurse/Midwife, Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and current NSW Drivers License (if required by service).
- Minimum five years full time equivalent post graduate qualification experience and a post graduate qualification in field of practice.
- Proven clinical leadership skills and an ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary framework with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in nursing/midwifery practice.
- Demonstrated effective communication and inter-personal skills across a variety of mediums and knowledge of the practice development framework to clinical practice.
- Demonstrated involvement in the development/change of clinical practice underpinned by evidence based research.
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to strategic and clinical service planning.
- Proven skills in clinical teaching, the identification of education needs in the clinical area, and competency in the use of contemporary information systems.
- Ability to apply clinical expertise in client-centred consultancy with the ability to work independently.
- Demonstrated extensive midwifery experience in an acute care facility.
