The Diabetes Educator Registered Nurse coordinates and delivers high quality nursing care to patients/clients of The Sutherland Hospital (TSH) consistent with SESLHD and TSH policies, procedures and standards. The Diabetes Educator Registered Nurse is responsible for the provision of safe, efficient and effective health interventions related to diabetes education and management within the hospital inpatient and outpatient settings, and is a clinical resource person for patients and their families and carers, and other health professionals in the area of diabetes.  

Our Hospital and Community:
The Sutherland Hospital is a 375-bed, major metropolitan hospital and an associated teaching hospital of the University of NSW. Part of the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) and located in Caringbah, this area is blessed with stunning beaches and a Westfields shopping centre close by.

A $62.9 million redevelopment has delivered a new and expanded emergency department, 60 new acute inpatient beds, and storage space for theatres to improve efficiencies. Current refurbishment works to provide an expanded medical imaging service are in progress.

The ideal candidate will have:

  1. Current unrestricted registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia, and have completed an Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA) recognised course in the management of diabetes, and are credentialled as a Diabetes Educator or working towards the same.
  2. Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication, interpersonal skills and the ability to identify key messages, issues and concerns when communicating with others.
  3. Demonstrated ability to proactively engage with patients/clients to enhance service delivery and to guide others in providing service excellence.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and apply professional and ethical boundaries when dealing with complex situations.
  5. Basic computer skills and proven ability to use health information systems.
  6. Detailed knowledge and understanding of risk management, safety and quality principles and the role of the Registered Nurse in applying these principles.
  7. Demonstrated knowledge and recent clinical experience in all aspects of management for clients with diabetes in both inpatient and outpatient settings. 

Employment of a temporary visa holder may only occur if no suitable permanent resident or citizen of Australia has been identified for this position following suitable labour market testing. All workers and new recruits are required to receive 2 doses of a Therapeutic Goods Administration approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccine to commence employment/ engagement or continue to work within a NSW Health service.  A worker and new recruit will be considered compliant if they have a medical contraindication to all available Therapeutic Goods Administration approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccines and provide medical contraindication evidence in line with the policy requirements.

In addition, all Category A workers and new recruits are required to receive one dose of the seasonal influenza vaccine annually to be considered compliant. Category A workers and new recruits who are non-compliant with seasonal influenza vaccination or have a medical contraindication to influenza or COVID-19 vaccinations must comply with all other infection control risk reduction strategies as directed while working in a Category A position.
