What you'll be doing

To provide extensive specialist orthotic care to patients of the Sydney Children's Hospital Network

Primary function

Responsible for providing clinical, technical and administrative aspects of orthotic care to patients referred to the Orthotics Department, and through participation in the Orthotics team, works towards the achievement of the mission, philosophy and objectives of the Orthotics Department and the Sydney Children's Hospital Network.

Level 3 Health professionals may have a clinical, education or management focus or may have elements of all three features. They are experienced clinicians who possess extensive specialist knowledge or a high level of broad generalist knowledge within the Orthotic profession. They are required to demonstrate advanced reasoning skills and operate autonomously with minimum direct supervision. A level 3 Orthotist provides services to client groups and circumstances of a complex nature requiring advanced practice skills. They are able to apply professional knowledge and judgement when performing novel, complex or critical tasks specific to the orthotic profession.

They may be responsible for providing clinical supervision and support to Level 1 and 2 clinicians, technical staff and students. Positions at this level are involved in planning, implementing, evaluating and reporting on services. They identify opportunities for improvement in clinical practice, develop and lead ongoing quality improvement activities with other staff.

  • Bachelor degree in prosthetics and/or orthotics which provides eligibility for membership of the Australian Orthotic and Prosthetic Association, or other qualification deemed equivalent by the employer
  • Extensive post graduate orthotic experience. Advanced skills in all aspects of orthotic assessment and treatment (or in a particular clinical area within paediatrics) and evidence based intervention/orthotic prescription
  • Recognised source of expert knowledge in orthotic provision, functioning as a clinical consultant with demonstrated advanced clinical reasoning skills
  • Capacity to provide clinical supervision and support to orthotic clinicians, students, technicians and support staff
  • Documented involvement in planning, implementing, evaluating and reporting on services including development of clinical innovations and initiatives
  • Willingness to support other clinical areas as required and demonstrated ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team as well as autonomously
  • Effective oral and written communication skills including the ability to use appropriate patient management systems
