The Child Protection Unit (CPU) Department at The Sydney Children's Hospital at Westmead are seeking a temporary 0.6FTE (24hours per week ) Staff Specialist to join their team from 5 August 2025 through to 19 January 2026.

  • The position of Staff Specialist in the Child Protection Unit (CPU) is part of a multidisciplinary child protection team. The role of this position is to ensure the delivery of high quality child protection medical services to children when there are concerns that a child may have been abused or neglected.
  • The CPU Staff Specialist will provide forensic medical assessments for child sexual assult, physical abuse and neglect cases. The clinical service includes consultation to other clinicians to assist in the assessment and treatment of children at risk of harm.
  • The CPU Staff Specialist will participate in the CPU 24 hour on call roster. This position is required to supervise Junior Medical Officers (JMO) in CPU; in teaching and training students, JMO's and other clinicians within and outside of SCHN.
  • The CPU Staff Specialist is expected to participate in medical research activities in CPU and collaborate in research activities with other services and organisations. The Staff Specialist will be responsible for the development and review of medical procedures/protocols and guidelines as required.

  1. Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist in Paediatrics, and/or overseas trained specialist pathways.
  2. Demonstrated recent clinical experience in Paediatrics at the role delineation of the service.
  3. Demonstrated experience in Child Protection work and proven forensic medical skills.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership of a team.
  5. Demonstrated effective clinical communication through the use of information technology and written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to teaching, continuing education, research and quality improvement.
  7. Availability to participate in an on-call roster and to respond on site within a reasonable time.
