About the opportunity 
NSW Health Pathology Maitland is seeking a Temporary Part Time Technical Officer to fill a maternity relief vacancy. This keen and motivated Technical Officer will join the dynamic team of multidisciplinary technical staff who are servicing the needs of the diverse and rapidly growing Hunter Valley region.  

The Maitland laboratory is a 24-hour laboratory that perform a range of laboratory investigations by applying established methods and procedures, as directed.  Being a multidisciplinary laboratory there is a requirement to perform front end activities in specimen reception, some data entry during afternoon shifts and laboratory testing in the following departments: biochemistry, haematology and immunohaematology. Other responsibilities include analyser maintenance, quality control and activities as directed by senior staff to ensure ongoing compliance with NATA accreditation.

What you'll be doing

Perform a range of laboratory investigations and tests (manual and automated) and technical tasks by applying established methods and procedures, as directed. Undertake other laboratory duties including the maintenance of equipment in line with established laboratory processes, procedures and protocols.

    1. Minimum qualification of Diploma in Laboratory Technology or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution with subjects relevant to pathology or medical laboratory operations
    2. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the delivery of pathology services within a discipline relevant to the department, including use of Laboratory Information Systems, Patient Systems and Quality Systems
    3. Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner and to manage competing priorities to meet deadlines
    4. Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment whilst working autonomously to deliver results within specified timeframes set to meet client expectations
    5. Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers and patients as well as clinical laboratory staff
    6. Display initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to apply established principles in a pathology laboratory and investigate and resolve general and complex issues within the laboratory environment
    7. Commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement and to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities
    8. Ability and willingness to work shifts, on a rotating roster, including weekends and public holidays.
