About the Opportunity
A position exists for a permanent, full-time Technical Assistant in a dynamic and well-established Cytology laboratory. This is an opportunity to be a part of a broad network of laboratories across NSW, creating better health outcomes for our patients.

Cytology is a section of the Department of Tissue Pathology and Diagnostic Oncology located at the ICPMR, Westmead Hospital and part of the NSW Health Pathology network. The department consists of a team of caring and dedicated technical, scientific and medical staff all working together to provide speciality diagnostic cytology services so that clinicians can care for their patients and make the best possible treatment decisions for patients.

What you'll be doing
Technical Assistants are integral to laboratory operation and play an important role in the safety, quality, and efficiency of the service. They perform a range of laboratory duties supporting key laboratory areas such as specimen reception and preparation, slide staining, coverslipping, diagnostic archive, equipment maintenance, management of consumables and waste and provide support to scientific and medical staff (please see attached Technical Assistant Statement Of Duties).

  1. A working knowledge of, or demonstrated ability to learn, all aspects of the laboratory environment relevant to the Cytology
  2. Demonstrated ability to maintain high quality work output while managing competing priorities and ensuring patient safety and specimen integrity
  3. Demonstrated ability to work responsibly and collaboratively, with all Cytology team members.
  4. Demonstrated customer service experience and skills, preferably in a laboratory environment, including the ability to communicate effectively with customers, patients and clinical staff
  5. Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills combined with the ability to investigate and resolve general issues within the laboratory environment
  6. Excellent data entry skills including high attention to detail and data accuracy
  7. Awareness of legislation, policies and requirements relevant to a laboratory setting
