Purpose of the Position
Provide clinical assessment and management of patients referred to the Northern Sydney LHD Intellectual Disability Health team. This care will be provided within the scope of practice for Community Child Health endorsed by the NSLHD Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee (MDAAC).
The position will provide clinical consultation services within the NSLHD Intellectual Disability Health Service (ID service), with a role in capacity building with NSW Health clinicians in the provision of care for patients with intellectual disability and complex health needs.
The position will:
  • Contribute to the teaching and training of medical students, graduates and other health care professionals and to research, evaluation and quality improvement activities within the District.
  • Provide consultation, diagnostic, assessment, management and transition services for paediatric patients of the ID service.
  • Coordinate and deliver multidisciplinary outpatient clinics for the assessment and management of complex health needs within NSLHD and in collaboration with schools for specific purposes (SSP).
  • Participate in capacity building activities within the NSLHD and regional outreach LHDs with NSW Health clinicians and general practitioners  to improve the care experience of paediatric patients with intellectual disability.
  • Participate in telehealth consultation and case discussion with regional colleagues.
  • Participation in the development and implementation of strategic service development and growth of the NSLHD Intellectual Disability Health Service.
  • To facilitate at a clinical and strategic level, linkages with other service providers servicing the NSLHD population, including primary care/ general practice, CYMHS, external agencies.
  • Provide consultative services to General Practice and community based paediatric services as required.

Selection Criteria

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants must have Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in Paediatric and Child Health (Community Paediatrics) or recognition as a specialist by the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Consistently demonstrates behaviours that reinforce the CORE Values of our organisation; Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. Demonstrates these behaviours with all stakeholders; colleagues, direct reports, as well as our patients and consumers, and those that care for them.
  3. Demonstrated experience and knowledge of working with children and young people with intellectual disability and complex health needs and their families with a commitment to safe clinical practice, use of psychotropic medication and advocacy of support needs.
  4. Evidence of ability to work cooperatively with other staff and practitioners in a multidisciplinary care team and demonstrated experience or interest of working in a community setting, provision of outreach clinics/consultation and managing patients remotely.
  5. Demonstrated ability to comply with the service objectives of public health organisations, including the provision of clinical services to local community, effective utilisation of resources, preparedness to participate in provision of health, education and consultation services, in keeping with capacity building commitments of the intellectual disability health team.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to continuing self-education and development, including evidence of participation in continuing medical education/continuing professional development and service development and evidence of and commitment to quality improvement methodologies.
  7. High level interpersonal and communication skills and experience/involvement in quality assurance activities and evidence-based best practice.
  8. Current NSW Drivers Licence.
