Purpose of the Position
The Chair is responsible for the overall conduct of the HREC in accordance with the Terms of Reference and the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007, updated 2018). The HREC Chair works closely with the Research Office to provide professional leadership to the Committee Members to encourage best practice in ethical review.
The Chair will be expected to work flexibly by attending all HREC meetings and work with the Research Office out of session to review and approve applications.
The Northern Sydney Local Health District Human Research Ethics Committee (NSLHD HREC) reviews ethics applications for single site and multi-centre studies.
NSLHD HREC is accredited as a Lead HREC by the NSW Ministry of Health and is also a certified institution under the NHMRC National Harmonisation of Multi-centre Ethical Review Initiative (HoMER).
NSLHD HREC is accredited to review multi-centre research projects within the following areas:
- Clinical Trials – Phase II and above
- Population Health and/or public health
- Clinical Intervention Research (other than clinical trials).
Selection Criteria
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants must have Fellowship of an appropriate College or recognition as a specialist by the Medical Board of Australia.
- Consistently demonstrates behaviours that reinforce the CORE Values of our organisation; Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. Demonstrates these behaviours with all stakeholders; colleagues, direct reports, as well as our patients and consumers, and those that care for them.
- Actively interested in human research ethics and a deep and sound understanding of the principles underpinning ethical research, including knowledge and experience in the application of the National Statement on the Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007, updated 2018).
- The Chair must be impartial, possess leadership experience and demonstrated skills to manage Committee business, possess conflict resolution and negotiation skills and have an understanding of the ethical issues in human research.
- Ability to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with a wide range of people, both internal and external to NSLHD.
