What you'll be doing
The incumbent will provide clinical consultation across NSW Local Health Districts as requested. The Hand Trauma and Surgery Level 6 Physiotherapist and Unit Head position will provide clinical leadership and management of Hand Therapy, and specialist physiotherapy services and expertise and work as an integral member of the Hand Trauma and Surgery multi-disciplinary team, developing and delivering evidence based care to the patients of this service which is based at Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH).

The Level 6 Specialist Physiotherapist will have achieved nationally recognised clinical specialisation in Hand Therapy and will ensure that patients receive the highest possible standard of evidence-based care in line with national and international guidelines. 

The Level 6 Specialist Physiotherapist will provide physiotherapists and other healthcare providers expert leadership and physiotherapy consultation services to facilitate management of people requiring ongoing specialist treatment. 

The Level 6 Senior Physiotherapist’s role will include management, coordination and delivery of specialised services for individuals with upper limb and hand conditions, in conjunction with the Hand Trauma and Surgery multi-disciplinary team at RNSH. 

The Level 6 Senior Physiotherapist will (i) act as a consultant in the area of physiotherapy for hand trauma and hand therapy to other staff and departments across the local health district and state; (ii) have responsibility for education of other clinicians in this area of specialty across the local health district, state and nationally as appropriate, including the design, development, delivery and evaluation of programmes; (iii) liaise with key stakeholders regarding the supply of specialised services in an effective and efficient manner to the local health district, and participate in joint committees where appropriate. 

The Level 6 Senior Physiotherapist will contribute to the total health care needs and expectations of patients, clinicians and staff, and the community we serve by providing and maintaining a high level of standard of care within Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD) in Hand Trauma and Surgery.

The role includes responsibility at quaternary/ tertiary/ secondary levels for hand trauma and surgery therapy domains including clinical;strategic; leadership and management; education, training and staff development; research and quality.

Candidates will need to meet the following criteria:

  1. Consistently demonstrates behaviours that reinforce the CORE Values of our organisation; Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. Demonstrates these behaviours with all stakeholders; colleagues, direct reports, as well as our patients and consumers, and those that care for them.
  2. Tertiary qualifications in Physiotherapy and current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Physiotherapist, with eligibility for full membership of the Australian Hand Therapy Association.
  3. Extensive clinical experience in hand and upper limb physiotherapy including novel, complex and critical management of trauma and surgery cases.
  4. Relevant post-graduate qualifications and/or adjunct lecturer appointment with recognition by a professional body and/or recognition by peers as a specialist in Hand Therapy.
  5. Proven ability to provide leadership and strategic direction with demonstrated ability in planning, implementing, evaluating and reporting on hand physiotherapy services.
  6. Demonstrated involvement in research and ability to lead and collaborate with other members of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) and Physiotherapy teams to contribute to research, quality improvement projects and service development. Demonstrated experience coordinating team members, teaching and supervising staff and students.
  7. Demonstrated capacity to work cooperatively and effectively with medical, nursing and allied health professionals, in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  8. Capability to perform in a consultative role as a Local Health District and NSW expert in the field of Hand Trauma and Surgery Physiotherapy.
